Anybody Confirm This At DVExpo?

Rep said it was 'under 5K', not $500. I asked three times. He said it 'has all the features of the HVX200' except it does not shoot video. . .sorry. .

Panasonic also had a brand new ENG P2 Store/Mobile editing deal, very sweet looking, but priced at 10-20k or something, aimed at newstations and newstrucks.. . .

PS. Pana Rep reports 16gig card should be out 'around NAB' time. . ..

$4000, that makes it slightly less appealing :) .

A sorely needed product, just too bad that it costs almost as much as the camera.

yeah i picked it up yesterday and wished it wasnt plastic.. but it does have 2 usb ports, one for recording drive and one as a host port (very interesting). They actually had a portable drive hooked up to it.. but that portable drive was a self powered one.

They did have the big ass P2 edit bay "laptop" working (multiple p2 slots, shuttle, screen etc... it wasnt very sexy looking but the function seemed pretty valuable.

So what's the story then -- $400? Or $4000? Obviously at the $400 price point it'll have a lot of fans, but the $4000 price point is probably not going to work for a lot of people, so ... ?

For 4-5k I'll buy another HVX that I can shoot with when I'm not offloading. Makes no sense at that price.

Indeed...I think the most I'd like to spend on something like this would be like $1,500.

When I shot my quick video at DV-Expo, the sales rep. had just told me around $4,000.

He watched me as I shot the video and heard everything I said. After, he did not correct me, so I know I repeated everything he told me correctly.

$400 - $500 would be wonderful, but given the color LCD and all the connections offered, I don't see how it's possible.

In a way, Panasonic tried to put too much into the device. If they got rid of the color display and all the video outputs, they could offer it at a more reasonable price point.

If the device could offer the following choices, it would be a great tool:

(1) Copy P2 card to USB Hard Drive

(2) Copy P2 card to second USB Hard drive

(3) Verify file copy

(4) Delete files from P2 card

Well, with all due respect, you can get a PC laptop that can:
1) copy p2 cards to USB hard drive (or firewire, or e-SATA, or...)
2) copy p2 cards to a second USB (or other) hard disk -- SIMULTANEOUSLY
3) verify
4) delete files
5) run P2 viewer, including playing the clips back on the laptop's built-in color screen, including in full resolution
6) run editing software to do at least a rough assemble edit

and, most importantly,

7) buy it for around $400. I mean, on Friday it's the biggest shopping day of the year, "black friday"; I'm certain that CompUSA and Best Buy and Circuit City and Office Depot and OfficeMax are all going to have super-blowout deals on at least one laptop each at that price point.

Not to mention that it can run P2 Genie, it can run Word and Excel, it can surf the net, it can run Raylight or DV Rack or EDIUS (although, at $400, probably not quickly enough to do true realtime editing, but still...)

And yes, that'll be at the $400 price point. So -- what does this new product offer then? Tiny size and HD-SDI, I guess. But at what price? $400 or $500? I can see that, easily; a lot of excitement was generated here when we thought it'd be at that price point. But $4000 to $5000? I think it'd have very limited appeal at that price point. Maybe for larger news organizations, but I don't think at that price point that we'd be looking at a product "for the masses." I'd say the masses should get up early on Friday and go pick up a screaming deal of a PC laptop instead!

I dunno about you, but the video outputs would be most useful for me. It's pretty much exactly what I'm looking for in terms of a monitoring solution. A "deckless" vtr. Well, in this case it has P2 slots. So i guess it's a P2 vtr. "P2R" ?

If it is a playback unit only it is of no use and can use your HVX. So yes I yhink you can hook-up an external drive, that would sound for me the most logical reason to introduce such a device

edit : but at a price of $4000 not very interesting. I still believe that all these solutions are unnecessary.
P2 16 G cards and a small external powered drive will do the job for 95% of the HVX users. The whole idea of P2 Technology is to just have a 2-4 P2 cards only and not lugging around additional equipment.

Except that as-is, it has no storage. It's a playback unit but not a P2 Store. So that's why I'm asking if you can connect storage to it; if it can offload directly to a cheap hard disk then it becomes a serious contender.
