can't connect my HVX200 to my G5 or MBP...

Does anybody knows how I can connect my HVX200 to my G5 so I can use the G5 to record straight to it to avoid using the over-priced P2 cards? Also, how can I hook the camera to a MacBook Pro? I tried to connect the cam to my G5 using the firewire but I could not get any signal on the G5 when I have the camera on MCR mode (P2). When I switch to CVR (miniDV tape) I can see the signal on the G5, no problem. It must be a setting that I am missing. Can any of you please let me know if you have done this and what settings, on the camera or the G5, I need to change. I am planning to buy a Macbook Pro to use it as my hard drive but I want to make use it can be done before I drop 3 grand on it. Thanks, Indeefilm

  1. Make sure you aren't using a native recording mode (24PN or 30PN), in those modes no data goes out the Firewire port.
  2. The camera needs to be in IEEE 1394 mode, not USB or IEEE HOST mode.
  3. You gotta have an application that understands DVCPro50/DVCProHD.

thanks for the info. I did that and now I can see the footage on my G5 but when I hit the capture bottom, I can't capture anything. It just stays black saying that it is waiting for timecode. Any idea of how to fix that. Thanks, Indeefilm

they are all over-priced like hell. BTW, is there any other P2 that can be used on the HVX200 besides the Panasonic ones? Do you know of any other card? Anything higher than 8GB?

Panasonic is the only vendor for P2 cards and 8GB is currently the highest capacity.

There is an expected 16GB card but that will be sometime next year and will cost much more than the 8GB.

Bastards ! They just make you dependent on their product so you have no choice but to buy. There's nothing like having no choice !

Actually nobody else has been able to match Panasonic's standard, and those that could meet the standard couldnt manufacture the cards for cheaper than panasonic. Right now if you someone came out with a 3rd party P2 card it would be more expensive than Panasonic's. Jan from Panasonic has actually posted here than if a manufacturer can meet their specs panasonic would put in a purchace order for 1000 right now. No manufacterer has stepped up as of yet.

A box of 10 32-minute DVCPRO HD tapes runs for $265USD. Even IF the HVX shot DVCPRO HD to tape, at that price you'd spend more than a P2 cards cost really really quickly.

The HVX is a recording device, go buy some media to record on.

Why not start your own camera company?

Then you can charge what you want.
