RED and David Stump, ASC

Jannard

Red Leader
David Stump spent the day at RED today and set up a green screen shoot. I learned how smart David is and why everyone listens to what he has to say. He is VERY detailed in his approach. 1/10th of an f-stop matters to him. He is a trained professional.

I am going to let David post his findings before I jump in and tell you how well it went. He will probably post on cinematography.net. When he does, my bet is that his comments will find there way to this board.

This really makes me feel good. I know there are a lot of users on this website who have been very supportive of the RED team, but it's been a harder sell other places. Some of the posts I've seen on other websites, forums, and mailing lists have been beyond disrespectful; some people gone so far as to make rude comments on a personal level, including more than one who would otherwise like to be considered a "professional." By working with David and allowing a non-biased, accomplished DP to test and review their product, I truly hope RED will gain more validity among those who would otherwise cast stones in their direction. Even if his review isn't all puppy dogs and flowers (though by Jim's assesment that it went well, I can't wait to see what he has to say!), I think that just the fact that David was there will give RED some credibility in the public eye and help to silence some of the skeptics that have been been vocal since the project was first announced.

After the public screening on Tuesday, there should be no doubt anywhere that RED is for real and that their goal is (and always has been) to build the best camera on the market today. RED has had to deal with a lot this year - from the constant cries of "vapourware" to the break in at the offices - but I think they will emerge triumphant when the dust clears. There is undoutedly a lot still left to do, but when the camera is complete both the team and the customer will have something to truly cheer about.

Way to go guys... it's been one heck of a trip thus far!

Haak,

Such hostile behaviour is what we could and can find as a good sign indeed -- it means a lot! It isn't a question of luck the reasons why this project has been doing success over here and not there. Otherwise, I'm happy with this meaning.

:)

Jim,

:dankk2: for your care!

E.

The skeptics will be skeptics and talking smack way beyond the first camera shipments. That is just the way it is and judging from the way things seem to be going, skepticism will be a huge advantage for us early adopters.

In the past thirty years I've seen more than my share of luddite rock throwers. In the end, the massive wheel of technological development crushes them into the ashphalt along with the rest of the irrelevant noise.

It is no secret that Peter Jackson has his reservation in... as does James Cameron.

And these names will be good signs! :)

Well said!

I was wondering if RED camera can take the humidity of the jungle of Borneo, I know F950 couldn't. I tried F950 in Singapore and it generate so much noise due to the temp' and humidity.

Heat and sensors are like oil and water. We recognize this and are working to keep the sensor cool. There really is a lot to this project.

Hmmm...

Like a Peltier effect cooler?

You have no idea what I would have given or half the people here to have been and that shoot and just watch him lenes a shot. 1/10th matters now that is what I call someone who is truly a craftsman.

Hah! I KNEW Cameron wouldn't be far from this. This is the kind of thing that's right up his alley. I wonder if he'll shoot Avatar on RED. It should certainly be ready in time for Battle Angel Alita.

I think it is great for RED that Stump is doing a new green screen test in terms of getting the cinematography.com guys on board. To me, it is a "whatever"; I saw everything I needed to see from the inperfectly lit green screen a couple of weeks ago.

This would be the same Jim Cameron who, whilst you were launching your camera at NAB, was telling the world that there was no point in shooting and projecting 4k? :)

Doesn't surprise me though. I had heard that Vince Pace had reserved a few too...

Actually he said .net, not .com - they're different boards.

Still, they both give me literally seconds of entertainment each day
