O.K., so breathing is an issue for primes? I was under the (apparently mistaken) impression that it was just for zooms.

Yes cine primes do things a little different to circumvent breathing when changing focus. When you adjust the focus on a still prime, your effectively changing the focal length a very tiny bit.. a micro zoom effect.

Thats from what I understand anyway.

many older cine lens breath ..
one of my favorite lens Zeiss 10-100T2 breathes like a 100meter sprinter ( at end of race) = you learn to work around it as much as possible ...
even zeiss standard primes T2.1 breathe ...
you notice breathing more at wide end of zoom/prime then long end ( tele) of zoom (primes)
there's a "little" brerathing in zeiss hi speed primes 1.3's , cooke 20-100 & 18-100 - plus many others

no breathing =cooke S4's , zeiss master & ultra primes

Hi,

A simple lens focus's at infinity whens it is placed its focal length away from the film plane. (a 50mm lens is 50mm from film plane) Focus is achieved by moving the lens away from the film as in a bellows camera.

Motion picture lenses focus is rather more complicated, as breathing should be avoided.
