Ok, seriously how much have you spent on gear?

LuckyStudio 13

The Tapeless One
I almost fainted when I tally up on the amount of money I have invested in this.

I have spent around $ 8650 alone just on Camera, 2 Mics, tripod, a mixer, m35 adapter and a merlin stabilizer.

AND I STILL HAVE NO LIGHT KIT, DOLLY, Crane, NOR A MAC YET (trust me, my pc is not capable of handling editing) !

Please.. some one make me feel better

Over the past 5 years, close to $25,000 or more. $13,000 the first year, on an XL1s- GL1 combo, wireless set up, crappy Lowel lights, PC... sold off all that stuff, and just dropped about $12,000 this year on a HD100, new mics, new PC upgrades. No telling how much all the little stuff cost me in between. And I still don't have a full kit I'm satisfied with yet.

I'd say this year alone around 9g. On a 100b, G5, lighting and various other things...I'm not done either! Lord knows what I've spent in previous years, don't want to think about it....But it's money well spent...

I spent about as much as you. I have my camera, tripod, Mic, stabilizer, mattabox, monitor, and refelctors. I don't have any lights or a crane. I just rent my lights now.

I can do so many diierent parts in the media department im surprised i havent spent more.

I have a little over a 18grand in camera/mac's etc...
But! I really only paid about 5 of it, becuase i can usally get the job im working for to pay for what i need AND pay for my services.
Best part about it is im a one man army, so it all goes to me. :)

about $30k in two years and now I'm even camera-less, so I'm going to have to put another $10k to get a camera setup going again.

We'll see when RED comes out, because that could blow the budget for me.

The problem with my expenses is that I don't make money off of it. It's all just practice gear to keep the wheels turning and learn what I'm doing. A bit harder to justify the expense to the wife, but that's the way it goes.

You want to feel better? Check out what it cost as little as 10 years ago to get what we have practically for free now. NLE cost $100,000 alone. A Betacam camera with lens, etc would easily set you back $50,000+. Freelance people had to take out serious bank loans to get where you are today.

People can pretty set up their own production company for the price of Volkswagon now. Rejoice and be happy.

I was just joking with you Billy, because I sank about 3 grand into just my NLE system. You have to add in the cost of editing too, to be fair.

I know you were joking, I was too.

used DVX100 (original, 300 hrs w/batteries) $1,680

audio technica boom mic with pole and foam screen purchased off ebay new - $100 (works great too.

shockmount a friend made of remote control car parts - $0

Dell Dimension E310 PC with 160 gig HD, 1 gig of ram (I know, I know. I couldn't afford a mac system) - $800

Firewire port/wire - $45

Vegas Video 6 - $400

My friend owns a lot of sound equipment: mixers preamps, mics, cambles, 8 track digital portastudio, laptop with an interface for recording music, intruments, etc.

OKay, so there's a lot of stuff I don't have, but those are the bare essentials. I don't need a fancy lighting kit. I use photo bulbs and work lamps (Rodriguez style), and I just got my DVX, so there's a lot of stuff I don't have for it. But not much else I need. Maybe a decent camera bag, a few more batteries.

Like I said, I'm a minimalist. And whenI show anyone my film sthey don't say "Oh, nic elighting" or "I like the shallow DOF in that shot." In fact, if that's all they comment on, than I'm doing something wrong as a filmmaker. But I don't think my films look like ****. I know how to manipulate things to look decent enough.

Yeah, so, a little bit more than three grand, close enough.
