Red still gallery updated with new 4k still!

I just noticed that the still gallery on Red's website has been updated. New 2k versions of both exterior shots.

The close-up with the milk bottle particularly is very different to what we saw before. There is a lot of detail in the hair at the back of her head, which previously was crushed to black.

Also the slght green tint in the shadows is gone.

There is no reference in the page to this being run through REDCODE, so I assume is has not been. Nevertheless, I doubt the tints and black clipping I mentioned were anything to do with REDCODE compression (Graeme?).

I think it just shows that there is no 'right' way for a picture to look. Any version is just a result of different creative decisions, and the information is there in the original to give us maximum flexibility when making those decisions. What more could we ask for. Keep up the good work Red team.

Agreed, that looks much better. I think your statement about there being no "right" way for the image to look is very spot-on. As a DP, that's sometimes difficult to deal with as it gives the people in post a whole heck of a lot of power over the way the final picture looks - but at the same time, it would be silly to turn down the ability to have the most control over your images as possible. I would like to be reassured that it wasn't REDCODE that was responsible for the blotchy hair issue, but given how beautiful this image looks and the fact that Graeme says they're making progress with the codec on a daily basis, I'm not worried. This last version really sets any lingering worries I had at ease.

Way to go team.

Take a look at her mascara!

Take a look at her mascara!

I thought it was time to buy stock in Max Factor again, but now I'm not sure how well any make-up will hide blemishes. And besides one of her eyebrow hairs is out of place. Maybe we can blur that up in post!

Wow!

This grade seems to be shifting to magenta at the white point. Overall the color tones are much much better than the last version. Especially in the shadows on the skin. No more blue shift. But the little red spot on all of the highlights is bugging me a bit. It makes it look really "video". It's also ruining the tonal variation in the skin highlights. The more reflective the light on skin is, the cooler it should get... it looks like the grade is trying to undo this natural phenomenon and as a result, dramatically flattening the image.

Of course now... the whites are clipping because I don't have the 'extra' data to open it up a bit and there is a subtle blue shift from about 245-250 RGB but it seems to be less noticeable than the shift from neutral to magenta around 250.

Oh which reminds me... will there be any CA compensation available in REDCine?

I picked up on the magenta highlights and occurence of CA in the 4K pic too, Gavin. My guess is that the color shift is just due to the grading, given that the first image doesn't exhibit the condition. A lot of critical users are going to jump on that abberation though.

(Still, it is a darn nice image, don't you think?) :)

My hope is to harass them enough that they finally get fed up and give us the RAW image. "Let's see if you can do any better Mr Critical!"

It worked with the Green Screen image. ;)

I thought chromatic aberrations in highlights were a property of the lens and not the sensor. You are able to see CA in film-based still photographs and motion picture work, it's just that the film response tends to blend the aberation with the neighboring image element. It's almost like the digital sensor makes a more literal record of the CA.

Also CA tends to occur most visably at the edge of specular hightlights. I think the red shift along the milk bottle highlight is a blending of the intensity of highlight decreasing along the bottle curve and blending with the color visiable through the glass.

Most importantly, it's not noticable unless you are reading the RGB value of each pixel with an image processing software which I tend not to do when I am watching a movie.

I saw the CA and the magenta shift when looking at the image at 50%... I then went in for the kill to see if it was my monitor or the actual image.

It's also image symptomatic, not localized to that one location which means it's just the way the RAW image is being processed.

What are you people talking about?? I see reflections of her red lips on te end of the bottle and a tiny bit of purple CA on the edges of it. The CA comes from the lens and is a normal thing and you really have to look close to even see it.

I think the image looks great.
