Seeking Advice on a Mobile Editing Station

Hi all,

In the next two months, I am dropping a lot of money on new video equipment, but I'm trying to keep my costs to a minimum. I am about to purchase the AG-HVX200 with an 8GB P2 card on an equipment lease (I'll get a 2nd P2 card free with it), and also, I intend on doing all of my editing on a Mac.

Anyway, since I'm going to be gone all of December, April, and June-July filming, I'm looking for a reliable+performance-based mobile editing system.

I've been looking at the MacBook Pro for awhile now, and while it seems like it'd work perfect for my needs, an obvious issue I'm going to be running into is data storage.

So, with that in mind, what are some storage methods I could use that would also allow to me to edit efficiently with FCP?

What hard drives are out there that you'd recommend? I'm looking for something external that uses FW800, and preferably bus-powered so that I wouldn't need any extra power sources for my hard drive(s).

Any recommendations would be much appreciated, as I need to make a decision within the next 2 weeks.

Thanks,
-Z-

I've just got my new MB Pro (2.16) all pimped up for an edit that I'm doing out of town next week. I've got my 720/30pn footage on a FW400 drive (4 hours worth), and so far everything is actually running FASTER than on my Dual 2.0 G5.

If you really want to be mobile, look at getting a bus-powered drive.

Hello all...

Never posted here before but I would like to inform everyone on my recent location and post productions plans.

MacBook Pro 2.33 with Intel Core 2 duo for capture station and logging dailies etc.

SeriTek/2SM2-E SATA ExpressCard slides into the new express/34 slot and gives you two Sata inputs, allowing you hook up a mini mobile raid.

I had a couple of 500GB hard drives laying around and will house them in a FirmTek SeriTek/2EN2 Dual-Bay Hot-Swap External Serial ATA Enclosure.

Here are some speed test and looks like it should work out nice for me. The enclosure and card can be purchases together for around 300 and change.

So with a Terabyte of space to work on and some fire wire 800 client drives you should be in good shape, depending on project size of course. I am looking into getting a external HD blu-ray burner for archive or back up on location. My location for next project is on a remote island, so much of the archiving that could normally be done in the studio will have to be done in remote studio….via blu-ray dvds etc, still looking into it.

Hope this helped some, good luck everyone

Cheers

(ps...I will let you know how it works!)

I'm in Phoenix right now editing 720/30pN on a 320GB WD EXT FW HDD with my 2.16 Ghz Core2Duo. No hiccups!
