Redcine render times

I want to be able to use my Red One to shoot for HD output. So I definitly need a high quality HD downconvert and with my current setup, DVCproHD will be my online. However for those features I'm planning, I'll just be offlining in DVCproHD, so a fast downconvert will also be needed.

Hello earthling (i´ve always wanted to say this)...

dvcpro HD is a nice format, BUT, ant take that from someone who has >100 HD hours sold to european TV...you don´t want it if you plan to colorcorrect it. It looks ok/good, but its eats up your colorspace and resolution, and -processed- results will be quite inferior to what you could easily get. Also, most broadcasters in the EU prefer HDCAM (at least in germany) as delivbery, so if you go dvpro->render->dvcpro->hdcam you have a nasty datareductiontriplett.

So, if you can add $1000-2000, i would recommend to go with aja/blackmagic and buy a small nice sata diskarray in order to work 10bit uncompressed.

for offline its something different... there dvcpro is nice!

I work with the Andromeda DVX hack and can say that the processing time with Scultptor software is dead slow.... slow enough to put you off the workflow completely.

I can only hope that RED have it sorted as even though Andromeda gives you better quality the wait out weights the gains.

From what I can tell RED are planning a similar workflow in that the camera captures to its own propriety file system and you have to process the footage to what every industry formate your working to. I just hope the pipeline is faster than Andromeda.

I'm sure they have it sorted though, and have every faith that the talented team of RED will kick ass and ass all over the place so its just a waiting game to find out what they have to show.

I can't believe the other established companies haven't done this before, I guess they just got a bit complacent.
Regards
Rory

Yes indeed, and you don't open your presents before xmas, do you?

ahhaah

Actually, what about a Redcine SDK? I believe you've mentioned a possible Camera SDK in the past. A good Redcine SDK could offload some of the work to us! Maybe someone around here would like to take a crack at a network renderer.

SDK = Software Developers Kit for the layman. ([I think. [ God help me if I'm wrong ])

Downconverting to another file is just one workflow. The codec will do some tricks of it's own too.

Acquire and edit in REDCODE? Nice. Why stop there? How 'bout a REDCODE player for my HDTV?! Blu-ray... what???

Damien (earhtling): what are you planning to shoot in? 4K RAW, 2K RAW, 2K RGB, 1080p (or i) RGB or 720p RGB?

You don't have to shoot 4K :) The less pixels & data the faster it'll be...

I think I, like most people, would love to shoot for 4K right off the bat and convert from there. It depends on many factors... the system I can put together, FCP support, conversion time, REDFLASH specs & prices, destination, etc.
We'll have to wait for REDCINE testing to complete for a better idea on what we want to do. Until then, I'll just dream a little.

This is a guess but the good news for draft quality conversion speeds might be that because of the way wavelet compression works it might be possible to scrub through and/or decompress/recompress offline quality footage very quickly since the full 4K image data does not need to be decompressed, just the lower frequency layers.
