Post nuclear short finished!

and more on the audio
mics
mixer?
recorder?
very good audio as good as the video...maybe better
im listening on computer speaker

We had one RODE NTG-1 shotgun mono mic on the set and it was plugged directly to the cameras input. That one mono track worked as a base for the sound design.

We recorded tons of foley sounds in our basement and outdoors too (for example the gun shot and leather creaking). We wrapped large sheets of foam plastic around the foley artist and the mic. The mic was on the stand and it worked quite well. All the binocular shots sounds were created from the scratch. We recorded additional ambience with Sony ecm-907 stereo hypercardioid mic in to the minidisc.

The activation sound of the binoculars was recorded from my dads old camera flash and that adjusting sound from one of my fishing reels knobs :)

great footage , i actually thought the lead was ok.. and most of it looked very pro

and the good quality flash presentation really does it justice.

in seeing the "behind scenes photos" u guys remind me of the making of "bad taste" film , where they used loads of made yourself equipment and it was basiclly some pals getting togetehr with enthusiasm to make something... and we all know where peter jackson is now!!

so well done ..keep shooting stuf..man i wish i was 20 years younger with all this fine affordable technology about ! :)

cheers

Incredible images from the DVX you have there. My question would be how you achieved such a sharp image? The Detail is phenomenal in most of the shots so that it looks like it was shot in HD and downrezzed. Did you use some uprezz-technique or what is your secret to the sharpness?

No upprezzing, just normal 16:9 letterbox. I tried always to get a tack sharp focus, even during the camera movements. Compressing the footage at its native resolution is one of the real secrets I think. I tried different compression formats for several days, and finally the Macromedia Flash Video encoder 8 gave me acceptable results. And thanks androoow, that was really encouraging!

I'm sure the extra resolution of the PAL camera didn't hurt...

Upeeta. Miks tätä ei oo finfilmssissä?

Umm... Yeah, very professional looking stuff. :)
Ajattelin viivyttää julkasua sen verran, että saamme nuo nettisivut valmihiksi (www.badlaa.com) Mukavaa, että täällä on Suomalaisiakin :)

And in english: we'll soon open the web-site at www.badlaa.com, there you can watch this short and follow the progress of the new episode. I'm planning to get the M2 adapter before christmas and hopefully use it in the next short.

The short is now also watchable at www.badlaa.com/vartiovuoro.

All I can say is wow!

Love it, you've really created a BIG movie feel in those shots.

Love the use of the JIB, didn't get to use mine on The Nightshifters but I'll
be sure to drag it out for drama fest!

The end titles really top it off, very creative.

Congratulations

Richard

WOW! I'm floored... Please continue this saga... Winter, Absolutely... You've got nothing to loose and a whole lot to gain from your next one.

Yeah, very very cool! The only turn off for me was the guy on the floor scene. When he was waving his arms as if he is trying to scratch someone. I mean no one on the ground tries to throw their fist in self defense. Also the scene went from the dude getting kick in the ass with the foot and then wham he is passed out from something.

Would of been a cooler shot if you had the shot where the foot is coming down after the shot when he's getting his ass kicked, so it would of been 1) arse kick shot 2) foot shot 3) the dude is passed out shot and rid of that girly fist fighting scene :)

The rest, no complaints

I've come to the conclusion, there is a reason why you passed on dialog ...this time around...maybe testing your Folley?
If there was dialog....would you have recorded it to cam, then add Folley, or use ADR?

I'm learning stuff here!

theKGB: you're quite right about that fist fighting scene, it isn't so great :)

Why there is no dialogue:

1) I wanted to create a certain atmosphere with that.
2) All actors were amateurs.

If we had dialogue I think we would have recorded it straight to the camera. I've been dreaming about an external field recorder, maybe in next movie :)

I´m a sucker for everything post nuclear war so you had me from the first frame.
Other than that, I can only agree with everybody else in this thread. I'm extremely impressed with just about everything in this short. Camera movement, picture quality, sound, props etc. Looking forward to see more work from you.

The feedback has been so positive that we'll start planning the next episode as soon as possible.

Here's one example of how the CGI involved shots were created:

1.jpg

1) RAW footage.

2.jpg

2) Here I have brought the ship from 3dsmax as a TGA-sequence in to the After Effects and have dragged it over the RAW-footage. It isn't looking good at all :)

3.jpg

3) I had to draw a mask because I wanted the ship to come from behind the rock. And it was also done because I wanted to replace the sky with a cloudless one. Only little of rotoscoping when his head goes over the rock line.

4.jpg

4) Here I have placed the earlier shot sky background -layer behind the main layer and it sits there quite nicely.

5.jpg

5) Now the ship is behind the rock, but it doesn't look too real.

6.jpg

6) Here I have added some Channel noise, Light wrap (from the sky layer), Edge composite and glow. Only the CC is missing.

7.jpg

7) The CC'd final composite.
