Red Money

I'm curious, how are you all coming up with the money for Red gear and whatever other costs are going to be needed for the film you're planning to shoot? Do you have any investors and if so how did you find them? Are you financing it all out of your own wallet? Are you putting it onto a credit card and hoping to pay off the card with money made by using the camera?

I have been putting aside whatever I can every month up until this point. A few weeks ago when I sent in my reservation I budgeted out a set amount to be set aside every month. I suppose if it takes long enough to deliver I could have it all paid in advance (provided that life goes according to plan)...if it comes early the balance will go on a credit card or better yet a financing program if they make one available...either way the bases are covered. Ultimately it's a lot of reordering of ones life to sacrifice other things...but hell I'd say it's worth it...a few months ago this is what it would have taken for me just to be able to rent a cinealta pkg for a 2 week shoot, so all in all this is an amazing opportunity that I am not going to miss.

big ticket item = not buying a new auto in 2007 ...
started cutting back on other luxury items/travel last May ...
currently only have short projects ( under 5min) planned ( funds =my wallet) ... will let several friends use RED on their personal projects .. not planning to use RED 103 for paid projects/work - light meters is all that i like taking to set/work ...

will have to talk with tax advisor at end of year - may set up a LLC ?

I have no wife, no dog, no mortgage and no social activities other than diving. Everything I am, will be and ever have been is dedicated to diving. I spent too much time in a previous chapter of my life witnessing the horrors of wars and civil unrest to put my hopes in world peace and harmony. Beneath the waves I am free........

I've also had the good fortune to have met some great people along the way, people who have now indicated their willingness to help me with budgeting for RED acquisition and a subsequent project which will take some seven years for completion. Thus far I am also looking for a potential post house / private entity as an ongoing facility to work with during that time. I'd love to keep this thing in the 'RED Corner' as it were so if there are people interested out there we can discuss that further.

Cheers,
Mark.

Very eloquently put Mark (so were you in the military at one point also?). I can relate...but there are no waves for me, so the return to the veiwfinder equals my freedom--- I will certainly root for you on in your endeavours.

Cheers,

I spent 12 years in a mixture of English and French regiments serving in places that didn't have any postcard sales outlets for some reason!! I learnt to dive in Djibouti, Red Sea, whilst on active service. I basically spent all the time I could in the water as it was there I found my peace. From there I went to Sarajevo in the mid Nineties, again on service. No water to hide in, just an Ocean of madness. Too much hatred, too much pain, too much madness ........ just too much.

Now I leave that behind me and look to the future. I hope and dream that what I see now will help others, whether as a way to find inner peace or in an educational direction. I don't place too much importance on the materialistic way of life. RED for me is a tool with which to project my experiences, experiences I hope will help others.

All the best Mark. I am sure you will make a great sucess of your work. I am going to be doing a fair bit of underwater work with my red here in Scotland. The wide angle 35mm still prime lenses are very limited (thats what i have found so far) in Nikkon. I fear it might be the same for other suitable makes?

If possible keep me informed of how you get on and particularly the DOF issues which scare the bloody hell out of me. If i come across anything useful i will pass it on:)

Mark, I am glad you made it out intact. I was apart of Operation Rapid Response summer of 1995 (in support of UNPROFOR 6). We worked the C-5 air bridge to bring troops, beans, bullets, and band-aids to Zagreb. We were safe in Split, but I did make incursions in country with british soldiers to see the devastation. These things do change your outlook and as to what is really important in this short thing we call life.

My RED money is coming off of two completed corporate projects. New clients are already very interested in the possibilities of the RED. I have alot of projects that were put on hold due to an accident that left me immobile and bankrupt for four years. I am still digging myself out of a hole, but my shovel has RED written all over it. 2007 will begin my year of redemption.... This is not my first rodeo.

Cheers one and all...

ive got a well paying job.. "finally" .. Alhamdulila (thank god in arabic), by april.. i'll most definately be able to get me a red, a set of primes.. now im thinking.. 28, maybe a 35, 50, 85, 135 and a tele.. a 500 or a 600...
thats almost 9-10k on lenses. a set of legs, a head. a jib. and rent out the wireless focus gear until i could afford a wireless follow focus solution. WFF themselves cost a lotta money. as for editing.. it'll mainly be offline 720p.

It certainly does. I was serving with a French (OK, you guys are astute - I served 5 years with the French Legion as part of my military past), and worked all along what was called the "Corridor of Gorazde" or "The Corridor of Death", not a nice place to be especially in December '93. I was a foot soldier working the mountains around Trnovo and Sarajevo.

My Red is coming from hard work thus far and some great people who believe in what I do. If you wanna get some idea of my work you can check out Episode 30 of DiveFilm.com podcasts available through the iTunes Music store or you can download from here:
