Other than this:

Which apparently isn't Mac compatible, what is everybody doing to get p2 cards out of the cam and into a Mac desktop?

Firewire can fry ports.

p2 Store in pricey

no 32-bit USB or Firewire readers

Is it just mounting the cam p2 card via firewire and holding your breath?

I either dump P2 to powerbook, or off camera directly to firewire hard drive.
Firewire is pretty safe to use, but you got to know how to handle the gear.

I use P2 Log. Works great, reasonable as well.

I'm thinking about the actual TRANSFER from p2 card to the computer.

I hate always having to transfer using the firewire connect mode.

I connect the HVX to my Mac's using USB 2.0

Never an issue, 100% success mounting

Why would you use Firewire to connect to transfer the P2 card?

does this take longer? offloading a 4gb p2 card are we talking a few minutes time?

Because Panasonic specifically says that using USB with the mac is not guaranteed. They guarantee that 1394 Device mode will work with a Mac, they do not guarantee USB Device with the Mac.

They do guarantee USB Device with Windows, they do not guarantee 1394 Device with Windows.

Not guaranteed to do what though? Guaranteed to mount? Guaranteed to transfer all data? Every single bit of video from the P2 to my Macs has been transfered and mounted using USB 2.0.

It was the opposite for me, i couldnt get firewire to mount 100% of the time and even trying to use Disk Utility to mount it didnt work more than 25% of the time on my Intel machines.
