MIDNIGHT CHRONICLES - 1st Trailer & Website!!!

I love the FX and the sets, SO BEAUTIFUL!!!!!! Fantastic cinematography... but I have to say... "Holy Lord of the Rings remake, Batman!"

Even the title came onto the screen the same way LOTR did. The cities, the capes... it all is almost an exact replica of LOTR. But, like I said, IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!!! I love it!

I like you post the trailer so us poor people on their sisters computer can see a windows copy of the trailer.

But from the stills etc., looks great.

I had no problem viewing with Quicktime on a windows machine.

Visual Effects

In regards to individuals posts asking about the visual effects done on this project, I have been heading up the visual effects department for the last ten months as both the on-set supervisor and the post-production vfx supervisor. So if you have any specific questions regarding the process ask away and I will attempt to respond in a timely manner. As of Sept, Mat Gilson (that would be me) as well as James Waterson have been the only two artists working on the FX. If you are looking for some simple breakdowns of some of the shots I have worked on you can visit my web page www.matgilson.com to look at stills, as well as my demo reel as it stands now. I hope by the end of the month I will have re-vamped my reel. Thank you all for your comments and taking the time to check out the project.

No I'm on my sisters old windows 98 and I believe the latest quicktime doesn't work with 98. I know she's going to update when she moves. She decided not to buy a new computer till then.

So most of the time when I download a quicktime. A window pops saying would you like to up date and when I say yes it says sorry we don't support 98.

Just thought I should try it in VLC.

It won't let me down load it. Some error window opens up. Whoa is me.

Yes but I'm remodeling my house so I go online between paint drying sessions.

I should be done today.

So maybe I'll run over to a friens house. That is if she's ever home.

I'd like to know more about those sets. Did you guys build them or were they already standing? If so, where were they standing?

DId someone anwer this question?

I can answer that question for you. The majority of the sets (including the town buildings in question) were built in the studio. The only standing set that was actually filmed on a location was the Blackweir gate (in Pepin(sp) Wisconsin). I hope that answers your question. If not to the degree you were looking for feel free to ask for specifics.

Again, thanks for the comments everyone!

As you might have guessed, MIDNIGHT CHRONCILES is heavily laden with FX shots and requires a ton of VFX work. We currently have a small team of über-talented artists who work every day - Mon-Fri here at our studio. They use a combination of software to accomplish our shots, but the big three are:

Shake for compositing, Photoshop for matte paintings, and Maya for everything 3D. We're looking forward to putting together our VFX segment of the behind the scenes documentaries for our website. I think your heads will spin when you see how some of this stuff came together!

I wouldn't probably buy the dvd just to see the movie, but if you included how it was made behind the scene info I would definetely buy it. I'll put it next to my broken dvd. Maybe a special 1000 copy run for dvxuser.com!

Hey Nik! Don't worry, there will definitely be "Making Of" featurettes on the DVD. In fact, I think you should buy one DVD for EACH "Making Of" documentary included on the disc. It's only fair!:)

You are going to go far in this business. :)
Now if you include One dvd with HD quicktime and Windows Media HD versions I might buy 1 regular and one HD. As a way to create some buzz around here you might want to release a minute of green screen to the dvxuser community to composite. I am sure that would create some serious buzz. You are already buzzing now so release the footage around the time the DVD will come out.

Also when is the release date and where do I preorder. I am in LA when is the showing? Oh and Snakes on a Plane thats some nice footage.

I may have already missed the proverbeal boat on this one, but maybe a little too much was spent on the cg, and a not enough spent on the cast. That or hire a real director, not the CEO of the company funding the movie. As beautifully shot as this looks, I think I would have a difficult time watching it from start to end. Thematic consistancy is only one part of the director's job...

Wow. Very amazing! Did you use a 35mm adapter? Also, was the greenscreen footage that the HVX produces easy to work with?

Hi Gary and Wesley! Thanks for the comments! We didn't use a 35mm adapter (though we'd have LOVED to have had one)

Green screen is always tricky to work with - but for the most part I think we had good success with the HVX's ability to handle it. Obviously, the more work you put into the source footage the easier it is to work with in post. (And it doesn't hurt to have a program like Shake either - especially when you've got an experienced driver at the wheel operating it)

We've got a great documentary on our VFX work in progress that we're looking forward to posting on our website. In the meantime, you can check out the new photo gallery we just put online - it shows a few shots from MIDNIGHT CHRONICLES that takes you from storyboard to finished composite. Check 'em out! Thanks!

Hey man, If you ever need a director for one of the other film projects, give me a ring. I have ALWAYS wanted to direct a fantasy film like this. Currently I'm in production of a Fantasy film called "The Amulet", which is kind of like yours, but on no where near the scale...

Keep me in mind :-)

I just want to say here, Awesome, and huge props to you guys for the work you're doing. Finally someone thinking big with the tools available to them now.

And I want to say to the rest of the board, this footage looks a MILLION times better than much of that shot with 35mm adapters, because they took care of the principals: lighting, framing, and camera movement. Once again proving that optics can be overcome by putting this camera in the right hands.
