Fun Autumn Footage

Hey everyone.

My buddies and I went to the park with some cameras the other day with no real direction other than to shoot some footage. I ended up editing this piece together and played around with Gfilm a bit. It is a really fun plugin.

The video is primarily a test of Gfilm's basic and S-Curve filters. I played around a bit with some of the warm and diffusion filters as well... just having fun.

A fun video, nice looking colors and DOF shots. When you say "Gfilm" are you referring to Graeme Nattress' fillters?

Yep. I am pretty into Magic Bullet as well, but the Nattress filters are fun to play around with too. Those guys are awesome.

And thank you for the kind words. The camera settings were very close to factory. I really think the DVX speaks for itself.

Lake Films - I have used Magic Bullet quite a bit, but it was not used on this clip.

Chris - Thank you. The parts with me in the same frame 3 times is 3 clips stacked on top of each other and cropped accordingly. I kept the DVX still and ran up and down the hill a few times, making sure not to cross any of the same "paths." When I cut them together, I just cropped the image as far left or right as possible so the clip below it would show through fine. It is basically a 3 way split screen.

Awesome!

Newb ???s. How did you do that transition with the b/w and kinda of a flashy effect.

Thanks
Buck

If you want to be really, really picky, you can do it all in Photoshop or FCP's Color Corrector filters, but I like using the transition filters that plugins like Gfilm give you.

It is pretty cool because you can tweak how many frames the transition's "burn" effects and if you want it to effect the speed of the stock to replicate film effects. I highly suggest checking them out here:

I agree. That was really fun. Made me want to go outside and shoot right... now! I just might.

Outta curiosity, what setup do you use (adapters and such junk)? The image and DOF were really pretty...

I actually put my scene file back to default for this clip. I wanted to test the FCP plugin from nattress called Gfilm. I have it but rarely use it, but I was so please with how this looked (esp. on my TV) I am going to start using it more.

A lot of the footage looks like I cranked my master ped. way down, but it was only at -5. Instead I used an S-Gamma filter to crush blacks and I am now obsessed with it. I might go out again tomorrow and boost my master ped. to +5 and crush in post again.

We'll see... it was snowing here in Michigan all day...

No adapters were used. Just a plain ol' DVX.

Hello all-

Since we used my camera for this shoot, I would be happy to share my scene file settings!

24PA
Detail Level: -4
V Detail Level: 0
Detail Coring: 0
Chroma Level: +3
Chroma Phase: 0
Color Temp: 0
Master Ped: -5
A. Iris Level: -2
Gamma: Cine-Like D
Knee: Auto
Matrix: Cine-Like
Skin Tone Detail: Off
V Detail Freq: Thin

Also, this was shot in squeeze mode.

I frequently shoot with the master ped at -10 or lower, but like to play around with the settings. I am a frim believer in in camera color correction to avoid too much post molestation of the footage. For warm colored days (like that one) I white balance on a light blue warm card that I made from a paint sample.

If anyone has any questions, feel free to PM me. I own the copy of Magic Bullet that came with the DVX for a while, so I might be able to answer some questions.

Thought for sure you used an adaptor. The scenes are very very beautiful and some shots looked like you added a soft blur?
What a camera!

I have played with adapters before, and they are really cool! However, the lens on the DVX is so nice and can make some beautiful images. Shallow depth of field is easy to accomplish if you:

1. Shoot from a distance and zoom in
2. Keep your iris open.

Happy Shooting!

nice man, nice. "go outside with your friends... www.firsthourmovies.com"

loved it! nice colors!! a little jolty on the focusing but what can you do... the only viable solution is a follow focus... and we can't all have those, can we?
