Battery Mount Warranty Issue

Hi Guys,

Just tuning in for a minute as I am pretty laden down with personal issues these last two weeks, keep in mind that the battery tabs do not automatically break. I have 15 cameras in my little marketing pool and they have been shipped to virtually every reviewer in the industry and around and they do not have any broken tabs. We have shipped over 12000 cameras here in the US and only about 100 have broken tabs.

What does this mean? If you haven't broken your tabs yet, it is likely that you won't. It is more about how the camera is set down and whether the battery is put in a position to be hit. I would say continue to treat your cameras with same respect that you have and I am sure that you will not have this problem.

I do not know the answer to the question about after the warranty period, but when I am able to get back into the office I will ask. As I said I have not been there in two weeks, 18 days to be exact.

I trust this helps,

Jan

I don´t know how many laptop batteries exploded or burned so far, but eg Apple had all of the problematic Sony ones called back...
If you´re lucky enough to have paid runandgun jobs every other day, I bet this production flaw comes up more often than when only using the HVX once a month for musicvids or alike.
I can understand why you´d say things like "I would say continue to treat your cameras with same respect that you have and I am sure that you will not have this problem." but I´m sure you´ll understand that most people in our business won´t buy your marketing lingo.
User feedback probably saves you tenthousands of R&D costs, so I believe it would be just fair for a company like Panasonic to cover the costs for this "public beta testing".
I´m also sure the HVX 2.0 won´t have that issue no longer, right?

Regards,

Spart

I am asking myself if there is any "production"-batch that had specificly this problem, or if this can happen to any hvx ?

Cause we have different production here in pal land or not?

Thanks jan!

Thank you, Jan, for sounding in and giving us the larger picture. It is always enlightineing to hear from you. Good job, keep on it, I'm behind you all the way! If I can be of any assitance, please let me know. I personally feel Pansonic is very honest and up front on issues.

Ben: I don't think anybody is accusing Panasonic about being dishonest.

My and other's point is simply a request to clarify broken battery mounts past the warranty period.

Or fixing them before they break.

Nothing more.

All Jan told us is that she'll get back to us on the issue, and that she hasn't seen damage in her review pool. That might be significantly different that a production environment.

I am interested in Panasonic's response, and hope everything goes well with her personally.

regards

Thanks Jan - keep up the good work. We all know you will let us know when you do.

From what I can see most if not all of the people reporting that their tabs are now broken report that they were broken during transit with the battery attached to camera. Solution - remove the battery when not in use at all times.

Being aware of that will reduce the battery tab issue for all - it has for me so far. Also using Jarred's velco solutin, though not recommended by you, holds the battery tight in its compartment during use. . .. ..

That's one solution.

However, in doing this for twelve years now, I've never had to take these types of precautions, nor add velcro to a $6000 cam.

Let's hope that we can some clarification on this.

My tabs just broke. I'm dropping off the camera to the LA service center and I report back later.

Hi Everyone,

I had an opportunity to check in with the service guys this past week on what happens if the battery mounts do not break until after the warranty period of one year. Well they said that they would still replace them as if it were still in warranty.

So I had a feeling that is the way they would go, but please recognize that this is not a huge problem we have replaced on a worldwide basis less than 1/2% of the mounts.

For educational purposes, I would like to know how people are breaking them.

Best,

Jan

Jan, can we in Europe use this statement of yours in case (hopefully never) it happens to us?

My tabs haven't broken, but I do find that if someone bumps into my tripod or sometimes just shooting handheld- the battery comes loose for a second and turns off. Would this be the same issue? (It seems as if there isn't adequate support from below for the large battery to be connected this way)

Hi,

You should take a closer look at your tabs. They may be broken, or one is. The battery should not be able to come loose.

Best,

Jan
