MacBook (not Pro) run FCP 5.2.1?

Will FCP 5.2.1 run on the new MacBook (not Pro)? I looked through a number of threads, and I didn't see a clear answer to this question.

*Edited: the title should read MacBook (not Pro) FCP 5.2.1 Compatibility. Sorry, brainfart.

According to Apple, no it won't.

But some people insist that it will. I tried it and it didn't work. If it can work it'd be nice if people posted the steps they took to get it to run.

I just did a 5-day shoot using a 1.8 MacBook to dump footage off to a FW HDD in the field. Worked like a charm.

5.1.2 is running on my laptop - isn't officially supported by Apple though. I did a normal 5.1 install and ran Software Update. Motion doesn't do everything right, though, due to sub-spec GPU.

Barry, that's what was confusing me: yes, no, yes, no...and MikeM, are you saying you ran through FCP to the HDD?

Maybe I should clarify: I'm running an Intel Core Duo 2.0 MacBook with 2G RAM, but Apple says (on its web site, now that I'm reading REALLY closely) that FCP won't run with the chipset in my MacBook.

On the other hand, it used to be that Aperture wouldn't run on this machine, but with the latest update it does...

Technically it won't - due to a video and GPU issue - but if you install the program from a capable machine - say a G5 - to your laptop using target disk mode and then update before running initially it just might work. I haven't tried this yet on a Mac Book - but I've done similar things on my old Power Book and some older G4 systems with Aperture and Final Cut. I have had sucess doing this with other Apple apps that have certain requirements as well.

Nathan, I've got a PowerMac G4 Dual 1.25Ghz machine -- do you think it will work as you've described?

And gents, if it won't, is Avid an HD/24F capable editing package? My partner prefers it in any case...

I thought the last version of FCP ia 5.1.2. ?????

I'm running 5.1.2 on a MacBook with two GBs of RAM, and a new TravelStar 7200 rpm 8 Gb 100 Gb hard drive.

I can capture to the internal drive, and I'm going to test a USB2 drive as well.

How much RAM do you have and what is your video card? Just compare your system setup to Apple's requirements below. You shouldn't have an issue to begin with with a dual 1.25. You can get around some of the install requirements you might not have with this process - though if you don't have them system perfomance may lag. I should mention that you can get around RAM requirements on an external install, but not at launch - you will need 512 and at least 1GB for HD.

Macintosh computer with 867MHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo processor, or Intel Xeon processor
HD features require 1GHz or faster single or dual processors (authoring HD DVDs requires a PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo processor, or Intel Xeon processor)
512MB of RAM; 1GB of RAM for HD features (2GB recommended)
Display with 1024-by-768 (or higher) resolution
AGP Quartz Extreme or PCI Express graphics card (Final Cut Studio is not supported on systems using the Intel Extreme Graphics 950 GMA)
Motion requires the standard graphics card found in any Mac Pro, MacBook Pro, iMac Intel Core Duo, Power Mac G5, iMac G5, a 1.25 GHz or faster PowerBook G4, or a 1.25 GHz or faster flat-panel iMac.
Mac OS X 10.4.4 or later
QuickTime 7.0.4 or later
4GB of disk space to install all applications
Additional 42GB to install all optional templates, loops, content, and tutorials (may be installed on separate discs)
DVD drive for installation
Playback of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored HD DVDs requires a PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo processor, or Intel Xeon processor
Replication of DVD Studio Pro 4-authored DVDs requires a DLT drive
Minimum supported graphics cards: ATI Radeon 9800XT, ATI Radeon 9700 Pro, ATI Radeon 9600XT or 9600 Pro, ATI Mobility Radeon 9700, ATI Mobility Radeon 9600, NVIDIA GeForce 6600 and 6600LE, NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT, NVIDIA GeForce Go5200 or FX 5200 Ultra
Recommended graphics cards: ATI Radeon X1900 XT, ATI Radeon X850 XT, ATI Radeon X800 XT, ATI Radeon X1600, NVIDIA GeForce Quadro FX 4500, NVIDIA GeForce 7800 GT, NVIDIA GeForce 6800 Ultra DDL or 6800 GT DDL

I thought you were using MBPs?

How did you install it on a regular MB? Apple says it won't run, and there's a dialog box that pops up and says "no dice, graphics card = no good" or, well, some more politically-correct thing that means the same thing...

On my NORMAL STOCK Macbook (512 MB RAM), I am running FCP 5.1.2 with a Western Digital 320 GB FW HDD. I am importing footage from a P2 Store directly onto the MacBooks internal HDD, and then I am duping it over to the FW HDD. When the MacBook gets a little too close to full, I'll delete the footage from it, but I've still got it on the FW drive.

Note, I am NOT editing or viewing footage in the field on the MacBook...

I also run FCP 5.1.2 on a white Macbook 2GHz with 2GB RAM.

I bought the original Final Cut Studio 5.1 and upgraded to 5.1.1 and recently 5.1.2 without any problem. I never saw the message about the graphics card being insufficient that Barry mentioned.

I only work with DV right now and capture to an external 3.5" drive connected via USB. No problem at all. Even Motion is usable -- though I am sure it will benefit from the better graphics card of the Macbook Pro.

As far as I understand, Apple says that FCP is not "supported" on the Macbook, but they don't say it won't run.

ScrollLock

Edit: changed FCP to FCS

Remember, I'm not installing Studio. I am installing FCP 5.1 and DVD SP and Compressor.

So it never does a test for Motion. And I am installing it with 2 Gbs of RAM, which I understood facilitates the graphics card.

I've actually installed it twice: the first time on the stock Toshiba 5400 rpm boot drive. Then I pulled that and installed it on the TravelStar Hitachi 7200 rpm replacement.

I can capture directly the the internal drive. I also will attempt to capture to a USB2 bus powered drive once the enclosure arrives.

Maybe it's the RAM that makes the difference? The one I used didn't have Studio, it was just FCP 5.1. And FCP itself wouldn't run.

Which enclosure dod you grab David? ive just been getting some Compusa 30$ enclosures for the time being and stickin 300gb drives in em. Each 300 ext is about 100 bucks a pop right now

First, apologies: it's 5.1.2, not 5.2.1 as I originally wrote.

My MacBook has 2G of RAM -- but the whole darned thing is being replaced because of the random shutdown / heat sink issue.

The PowerMac G4 Dual 1.25 also has 2G of RAM.

I'm betting that Apple will explicitly state that the MacBook IS supported with the next release of FCP, just like they did with Aperture.

Thanks, all, for your help!

It's a buspowered USB2 enclosure from CoolDrives.

This is just test, because you know my bias against USB2 drives.

It has a JMicron JM20336 Chipset.

I'll let you know.
