OT: extreme dynamic range display

not directly RED related, but it would be fun to see footage on this display:

200k:1 dynamic range- wow. They weren't even able to photograph it alongside a standard display, the whites just washed out. Apparently done with normal LCD flatpanel plus spatial modulation of the backlight with an array of white LEDs. Kind of obvious, once you think of it.

Unfortunately I can't think of how this could be done in a theater-sized projector, unless you replaced the projector bulb with a nano-fabricated array of arc lights.

Hmmm...

It's very possible. And is available right now, it's called: Front Projection CRT. Your nano-fabricated array is a matrix of phosphorous. Then again.. I doubt CRTs are capable of the brightness levels necessary for a theater.

That's something I've never understood about Brightlight. Their tech is very cool, but they're essentially only reproducing the capabilities of a CRT monitor. Every single pixel in a quality CRT can be ON or OFF completely. Even my rear projection CRT TV is capable of that. It's very misleading, without an indicator on the television even in a darkened room I can't tell if it's on.

Considering the technology is already capable of 100% black the only thing they have to work on is a suitable refresh rate on the reactive layer to produce sufficiently bright whites... Why start from an already broken technology? Oh well, if it works it works, but it's not exactly revolutionairy, it's just fixing an already broken system.
