Jack Daniel Stanley & Mark Johnson's REKINDLED

Yeah Herman, once again I am amazed at your range. Jack's music had a very Pink Floyd/Doors sound to me, as opposed to Ours and Brandon's. Amazing.

OMG! Herman, you did ALL of those scores???

Wow! Very impressed!

I know who to contact next time! (I'll leave my Garage Band alone! :) )

Thanks! :)

Feel free to drop a line at any time.

Herman, I've got to chime in here that I was more than amazed at your range. From listening to your other samples I knew you could do metal well, in fact better than any other composers I've listened to. Seriously, not only are you an extremely talented composer in the first place, but when it comes to rock, you rock like none other.

Then I listened to REKINDLED and you blew me away with a totally diverse side of you I'd not heard yet. And to know that you did that song as well with the vocals, etc.? Wow!

I'm on it right now, thanks for the feedback. Too bad we didn't had the chance to watch the evisceration effect it would be totally mind-blowing!
I also want to check out your guts 3D texture/material.

Mark, I'm convinced that you are a man who knows what to use his tools.

Thanks for the comments and compliments guys. I've posted a "how-it-was-done" site with the VFX I created for REKINDLED here:

Hope it is of interest to those of you interested in VFX for next-to-no-budget films!

Steve, THANKS!!!! I couldn't tell from your post whether you realized there is a quicktime clip of the effect at the top of that page. Or maybe you were merely referring to the fact that it wasn't in the contest version .... In any event, it was a really fun effect and one that was pretty challenging.

Mark - charge through the nose.

Charli, Ha ha!!!! YOU TOO!!!! While I sincerely hope you devote your efforts to writing more fine scripts, I have to admit that any company would be far ahead of the game to have you head up a marketing tour de force!

Well actually I did realize it after I posted...uh...my jaws dropped to the floor, I've seen it. You are a king of motion tracking. Funny thing is that I can believe how you liked so much the particle suck effect in Brandon's movie (I did it), since you are a super VFX artist! Anyway just wanted to say that I was impressed you like it.

Hey!!!!! I didn't put it together til now that you're the VFX guy Brandon raves about. YEAH, I loved that puppy and I posted a query as to how it was done, Steve. Brandon played ignorant and I never saw a followup. SO, was that a separate layer of the little kid applied over the wall shot? I played it frame by frame and couldn't tell and couldn't see any masking -- plus the shadows of the leaves on the wall seemed seamless, which led me to believe the kid is a separate layer. Am I right? Also, what particle effect was that? I can't get particle playground to do anything like that in AE so I'm thinking maybe Boris or maybe you're in Combustion? Geek me out a little here, ok? I loved that effect and wanna know how you did it!!!!

Thanks Norm!

I enjoyed watching R.E.M, especially on the cinematography end, and a great score by Justin!

I really liked this film. It was sort of like watching Twin Peaks. The sound was fantastic. I'm really sick of straining to hear some of the other submissions. This one was crystal clear. Your actors were great, but the dialog was kind of corny at times. But, it didn't detract from on overall great submission. This made it into my top 5.

Mark,

Great site / info. Thanks for all of the info, very impressive!

Herman,

I, like Norm, was impressed by the style you were able to produce- very different from other samples I've heard from you- great job.

Jack,

I'm still reading through this thread, so maybe it is covered already- but would you care to talk about the lighting set up, and what your thought process was behind your choices and how you ended up accomplishing it?
(if it is already covered, I 'll gte to it eventually- just so many pages to go through ...)

... I thought the acting in this was GREAT. In fact, I've looked hard to try & pull this down from the straight 10's across the board this got for me (well, a 9 in one category, but can't recall which one), and the more I watch it the more impressed I am every time.

I mean, really ... there are a lot of REALLY solid films in this fest ... possibly the highest number of quality films I've seen in a fest yet ... but none (IMO) have touched the attention to detail that REKINDLED did. I keep hearing Jack and a few others refer to "min es scene" ... or whatever, sound French and I really have no idea what it means ... and I'm guessing that means looking at all the small things ... even stuff that most may not notice.

But then when you throw it all together it's impossible not to notice. Most of the films (even the GREAT ones) are very plain with regards to the set, the music, the story ... but this one I felt had attention to all of it, and in greater detail than all the rest.
...

haha thanks for the additional thoughts Norm ... mise en scene refers to everything in the frame ... so its looking at the whole frame as a complete and controlled element ... in theatre it has a slightly different meaning than film where it refers to everything thats a part of the theatrical experience extending to sound and music and dialogue and acting, etc.

thx again

Hey guys -

You win for song that gets the most stuck in my head "rekindled...la da dee da dee da dee da da..."

Yup - so I think this is the clear winner in all respects. You all did an exceptional job - score, direction, story, effects - all great.

There's no way I'm reading through all 80 pages in this thread - I still have movies to watch, and need to vote tonight so I can do some drinking tomorrow night. So I apologize if this is stuff you've already addressed.

Picking this apart is kind of funny - the really bad movies , you're afraid to say anything bad for fear that you'll never be able to stop with the criticism and you'll only end up breaking someone's spirit. So, with the proviso that this movie was very well-executed and this is just small stuff...

There was something kind of awkward about the beginning - the way the shots are all spliced together, it seems a little jumbled from 0:00-:10 (though I do LOVE the intro). Something about in the editing seems a little clunky. Was this intentional?

Your actors did a great job, but I had a little bit of trouble reading into the male lead - I just didn't get him, didn't understand enough about what was motivating him. Craziness? Blood lust? Hatred for women? Or conversely, too much love for women (kind of like Lennie and the bunnies)? It would have been great if this could have been fleshed out a tiny bit more in the story and in the acting. That said, your actor still did a great job. And he was hot. But that's irrelevant...moving on...

Overall, stylistically I felt like this was a little over-produced (felt the same way about Bone Hand), and would have liked to see a slightly more organic style in your editing, effects, etc. Not SO much in the case of Bone Hand, but definitely with this one. I recognize that's just a style preference though.

Not critique but just a question - why was Jin upside down in that shot where the tear rolls down her cheek?

What I loved -

score was great, and entirely appropriate. really contributed to the film as a whole.

that darn record player - what a great way to bookend the movie. great idea.

good, proper ending. a real rarity in this festival. plus, this felt like it was SUPPOSED to be a story that could be told in six minutes (not one of those "i know it doesn't make sense now, but wait til you see my 20 minute version!" submissions).

LOVE LOVE LOVE that transition at :11 - spinning record dissolving into the spinning blood down the drain. genius.

loved jin's subtle change to pale toward the end

For Jack - overall, I think your final product here turned out much better than Bone Hand - it seems you've grown a lot since then in your art.

Great job - and way to assemble a great team to make something very special.

BTW, Mark, what's up with your broke-ass camera? I was helping Jack do a pick-up shot one night and I look down and the battery goes "ker-plunk" on the floor. Jack's like: "Yeah dood, it doesn't stay in."

goddamnit anyway.

i really wanted to win an hvx.

i told my friends i'd take them to the expensive steakhouse if i won.

i guess i just saved myself $200.

Ah, so you were in that sh*thole we called the set. Here's the deal: I was shooting some test footage down in the 'hole' while Jack was doing makeup upstairs. Our PA, Sam, had set up a 1000 Watt Lowel DP for a strong backlight and it started literally cooking my Canon Rebel that was too close to the lite. I jumped to grab the Canon (which was actually smoking - the flash was melting) and the tripod lock for the HVX wasn't tight enough and it fell. No sh*t. I thought I got off clean until I put the battery back on and found it had broken off one of the 'ears' when it was jarred loose in the fall. Bummer. So, you can shoot with it but I put a piece of gaffer tape over the battery to keep it in place. I'll take it in to see what the bad news is for replacing that whole back section and decide whether its worth it.

BTW, my big cameo in Rekindled? that CU of the drill bit. I was holding the drill. Notice the intensity of that drill spinning, the shere terror! That, my friends, is ACTING.

The other day I was coming home from the gym and as I'm pulling into the garage I realize I've been humming and singing this song for the past few minutes...
