CG Helicoptor Integration

Nice matchmoving and lighting.

I did alot of work on this technique in my computer animation degree 4 years ago so am very interested. What matchmoving software did you use, and did you capture you own HDRI of the environment?

****ING A MAN!

that was amazing, you must tell how this masterpiece was achievethed!

That does look good :) I'm curious to know what you did as well. 3D has never been my strong point.

I'm curious to know more on how you did this as well. What matchmoving software, what 3D software did you use? and who modelled that helicopter?

Thanks everyone for your comments. I'll try to answer your questions as well as I can. First I shot the BG plate on the DVX100a in 24PA, not that is whats important here. I'm not sure who modeled the heli, I think found it on Turbo Squid, I can model, but in this case I didn't have the time or desire, since my focus was on the rendering and compositing. The matchmove was done in Boujou. The track was actually fairly difficult due to the fact there not much parallax. Also the wood flooring in the FG didn't track well, probably because there was not enough stark points of contrast to track. So after some manual tracking and refinement, I got the track to work with minimal slip. Yes I did shoot my own HDRI light probe of the environment. I actually shot it with the DVX, which worked out pretty good. All rendering was done in Maya using Mental Ray to render. I rendered out several passes: diffuse, spec, shadow, occlusion, and reflection....etc. Just as a note, there are NO lights in this scene, all of the lighting was generated using the HDRI image. Then I comped everything together in After Effects. The biggest problem I had was dealing with motionblur. I rendered the motion blur in Maya, which significantly added to my render time, and would sometimes cause strange artifacts. I currently trying to figure out a way to render motionblur in post, if anyone has any ideas how to do that let me know. Again thanks for the comments and questions, I know that was kind of a general overview. If there is anything else you think I could do to improve the realism let me know, and if you have any more specific questions please ask.

Great stuff. I would love to see this technique incorporated into something bigger!

Do you have anything in mind?? I am wanting to do a more complicated test, preferably outdoors. So I am open to any ideas or advice.
