HOW did you vote?

For my 100th post, and in celebration of the event that I am now eligible to vote in Horrorfest, I thought I'd ask the other users how they voted on the ballot. I don't mean who you voted for, I mean how.

We were given a rating system of 1-10, 10 being best. So what does that mean? For example, if there were no visual effects in the film, what number would you assign? 1? If it was a great film, giving VFX a 1 would signifigantly bring down the average and the film would not score as well. This could really hurt a great film that didn't need any VFX.

I personally used 5 as a baseline. I rated a catagory 5 if I was neither impressed nor let down. If the film had standard edits (for example) that worked, nothing terrible, nothing great, then I gave it a 5. I adjusted up or down based on that. Same would hold for other catagories; if it sounded OK it got a 5, if it sounded like crap, it got a 2 or 3, if it sounded great it got a 7, 8 or 9., You see what I mean.

I also gave lower marks in the editing catagory for no credits.

HOW did everyone else vote?

Bad example, but you get the point.

Another blooper of mine; I just read that if you have a film in competetion, you don't need 100 posts. Oh well.

I also used a rating of '5' for average in each category, based on what I expected for a short film in this fest and also based on previous DVXUser 'fests'.

For Cinematography, I was looking for the 'shots', the composition, the angles, etc. I tried to discount the color/brightness knowing the films had been compressed.

Sound and Score where the most difficult. Sometimes the 'lack' of sound was intentional and so that was considered. For Score, I didn't rate low if it didn't have music. A lot of the entries had 'sinister' tones, or 'ominous' music, or 'stingers' and I rated those in the Score category and not the Sound category.

The other categories were pretty straight forward for me.

I might also say that I didn't rate any film category with a 10. I reserved a '10' for something that would completely 'blow me away', again based on my expectations.

I'm also wondering how many DVXUser members voted that did not have entries?

Congratulations and Good Luck to everyone!

i only gave out 2 10's.

never went below 2. 2 meaning there WAS sound, a picture, a score, screenpaly etc. not a good one but it was there.

I think its important to be fair. ALL aspects of a film must be judged. if it looked awesome, dont throw 10 around just because. 10 is reserved for REALLLY special aspects. Somethign truly amazing.

broken circle for screen play and Halfway for cinematography.

Therw no category for "unique ness or X factor or Cool factor" so i gave you guys screen play.

I had a few 10s in VFX, Rekindled got some 10s since I thought it was the best overall film and found that it was really SPECIAL in some categories (not all). I gave a few 10s in editing as well , for example, Broken Circle was given a 10 in editing even though it is a one-shot because this is how I judget its non-edited format, so SPECIAL, but that's just me.

I voted realisticly, and i found maybe 3 or 4 movies didnt make me and my friends laugh in a bad way. The average for most movies on my ballot right now is probably between 3 and 3.5, with the highest ranked movies at 6.5

uhh...sure. is there a problem? WIht how im juding that is? Im starting at 0 and going up.
