Rec-Cache mode on the FS-100

I have encountered a very annoying problem. I have by mistake recorded to the FS-100 instead in normal mode in pre-rec cache mode. Now I cannot import those files. I can see the MXF files but their not in their usual place in the Firestore file hierarchy, I'll send you a picture to show you what I mean (The files I need are located in the folder named "20061003-172637-01).

I really hope you can tell me there's a way to save those files.

I have recorded a very important clip into that. THe thing is I can see a 1.66 GB file there, but I cannot access it

What shall I do?

Cheers!

Ami

Been there, done that

Been there, done that

I did organize my P2, and when I import, I don't get the files from that specific folder.

I was wandering if you know anyway to convert MXF files to QT files using a 3rd party software.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Ami

MXF to QT can be done using the Serious Magic DVCProHD Decoder -- there's a free trial of DV Rack 2.0 HD available that should include the decoder and batch converter (both are part of the full DV Rack 2.0 HD).

DV Rack is Windows only.

That folder is not going to import. Think of it as a buffer. If you were properly set up, the cached footage will be at the begining of the clip you shot. It's not a seperate file. And that folder you're looking at is not going to do you any good, as they are not MXF files. What it caught in the pre-record buffer is actually the begining of the clips you imported.

I know it's Windows only. It's still worth considering if someone need to salvage the material, and it is in fact in MXF files. If it is a different format, all bets are off.

Ok, I got it figured out. If you folder named "20061003-172637-01" has files in it, you did not run the Organize P2 function. Once the Organize P2 funtion is run, regardless of pre-cache recording modes, that folder is empty, and the Contents folder is full of all that data in it's native, standardized form. I ran a bunch of tests on this today to verify, too.

Organizing P2

Organizing P2

Ben,

I did organize P2, that was the initial step.

Could it be that the problem was because my firmware version was 1.0?

Regardless, in your opinion, although I have an MXF file that has 1.6GB in it, I will not be able to restore that footage?

I'll try and use that software for PC, worth a shot.

Cheers!

Ami

You really do need to upgrade to the latest firmware. It adds a lot of reliability, will solve your problem, and offer some enhancements.

The MXF file you're looking at is something the FS-100 uses internally before you run the Organize P2 function. If you compare it to a P2 card, you won't find a file like that on a P2 card. You may find software that can read it, but as far as I'm aware, probably not. But, I could be wrong.

Always worth giving it a shot.

Are you actually missing footage in your clips? That' my question. And if you are, the firmware upgrade wil solve that.

Mising footage

Mising footage

Ben,

The answer sadly is yes. I am missing footage, very important one. Otherwise I wouldn't have bothered with it (although it's interesting stuff regardless)

The only reason I have a slight hope is that the file is huge (1.6GB) and in other instances I looked at that folder and it had quite small files.

Again, this could be one of the bugs from the version 1.0 of the firmware, which has been updated for some time. I stongly recommend you contact Focus Enhancements tech support, they're VERY good. I'd call them ASAP AND get the firmware updated (after you talk to tech support).

Ben,

Yes, I am missing footage, very important ones as well. I have upgraded firmware, we'll try and organize P2 again. will let you know if something happens.

Cheers,

Ami

Like I said, call Focus tech support ASAP. I'd have done that before upgrading. Since you ran the Organize P2 command, upgrading won't do you much good, I don't believe. Focus tech support is free, and they're super friendly.

Best of luck.
