Hey guys.
Let me know what you think. It's on Youtube for now until I get a website up and running. I shot the short "Binary City" (23 minutes long) using the DVX100A with a budget of $800. Sorry for the bad viewing version! Comments and critiques are much appreciated!

Hey I really like the look of this. Solid acting and your locations where good. The only thing that I noticed was the blast from the gun came out the top of it. I guess it was from the blank?

It's amazing how many people pick up a DVX, and wave the camera around for their shorts, expecting it to all magically look 'a bit like film'.

Therefore it's highly satisfying to watch something like this, where it seems real talent has gone into almost every aspect of the production, giving us a real 'cinematic' flick... and all for 800 bucks - another satisfying example at how damn good our little black and silver camera is.

Well done emptytea and do let us know when the website's up.

Kind regards

AndyJ

hey, the footage looks very good. are you from san jose state by any chance? i heard of a similar story to this trailer, but i'm not sure if you're the one doing it. did you use any adapters or was this just pure dvx100a? how long did it take you to shoot all the footage? thanks.

looks real good man. the acting usually is what ruins these kinds of things for me, and it looked real good in this.

on the same wavelength with ya there buddy. too many people concerned about "CC'ing" there footage when they should be trying to make film.

nice work though, looks like a film. Not filmic.

wow! This looks just plain awesome! Beautifully shot, wonderful lighting work in the cars (and everywhere else).

With a few of the shots, primarily the final shot of the man in the grass overlooking the city, reminds me greatly of Heat, which is definately a good thing in my book.

I'd really love to see this film! :)

The footage looks good, and pro. But the movie looks like 100s I've seen 100s of times.

If I were you, I'd re-edit the trailer so it doesn't resemble what we see so much of.

Thanks everyone for the comments and support.

I am indeed from San Jose State. I had a test screening of the short a few weeks ago. How did you hear about it? I didn't use any adapters. I'm a student, and I'm too cheap,..ha! But every chance I got, I tried to create depth by adding props in the foreground, or cheating the actors to create selective focus. The mini35 would have been superb though. But that would have put my budget into a few thousand (correct me if i'm wrong).

wonderful! how did you light those interior car shots? Looked great!

The DP built a car rig for about 200 bucks using supplies from Home Depot. With that we were able to apply them (with suction cups) to the windshield, and to the hood (for the exterior hood shot) We lit the car with two 10w bulbs (those energy saving kinds) and attached them to a cig.adapter converter. Voila!

Wow, so I guess I'm right. I don't know if you know a person named Brian Vermont, he's a film major from SJSU. He recently joined me in an Asian American Police Action Drama production here in San Jose, and he told me about an Asian American action short being filmed at San Jose State also. I figured since Asian American films are rare, and this sounds like the one he told me about, I asked you about it. I am in pre-production for my film, and having your knowledge and skills can help me, but you might be busy with other projects this fall? I also own a DVX100B, and this feature I am working on has a pretty decent budget. If you are interested, let me know. I need as much help as possible. Thanks.

P.S. I don't know if have the same goal as me, but I am trying to break into and support the Asian American film industry. It is RARE to find Asian Filmmakers/Actors here in San Jose, or in general anywhere. If you have any interest at all, please let me know. Thanks.

wow.

good job.

these are just 2 nit picky things from a "movie goer's" point of view.(well..cus i'm not very experienced in actually making them yet) haha.

the text you used seemed kinda cheap.

i wouldn't have said anything if everything else sucked..but everything was good. just something i thought would make it look more...not indy. haha.

and the shot where the priest slides the door shut, and cuts to the shot of the stripper.

I was expecting to see some cool action shots or random shots of the guys(i.e. the 3rd or 4th clip after the stripper when the guy is just standing looking out at the city i believe)

i think it would have been more effective and woulnd't have made the cut so slow.

idk...stripper doesn't exactly scream excitement to me.

just some ideas.

good job and goodluck.

bye

Judging from the trailer this flick looks to have different color schemes in the lighting. That sets it apart from other movies that look kinda *blah*...This looks fantastic, edgy and professional. The actors also seemed natural and real.

Emptytea, add me to your mailing list and I'll be one of the first to purchase this off you....Looking forward to seeing the final product.
