My Hvx200E is already broken :(

i can`t output something with IE1394.
i have tryed several cables and diffrent computers ,,nothing works !

2 weeks ago it worked just fine ,,now it is completely dead !

Its time for repair ,,damn crap ! :crybaby:

Are you using NATIVE mode? The HVX doesn't output to the DV port while recording in native modes.

DV-capturing from tape ,,nothing works
i have also tryed the master resetbutton, but it didn`t help i have contacted
my dealer so i have to send it to repair !

That's the only problem with the little 4-pins connector. They brake faster then an ancient china tea set...
Handle with extreme care when plugging in and out. That should get you some more time. And don't skimp on your cables. Get nicely finished ones with good connectors.
Or break it open and see if you can fit a 6-pins. Now that would be a cool mod... Ah, sweet dreams. :)

I use right-angled 4-pin FW cables, much more stable and safe. Forget where I got them, but I got a pair each of 3ft, 6ft, and 10ft cables.

right angle, what an awesome idea!!! Mine falls out of my laptop ALL the time and it is a 4 pin... the right angle would solve it!

It may not be the cables or pins at all. It may be the same issue that I've seen happen with two Pansonic cameras (DVX100A and a cheapo $300 one) as well as several other DV cameras. At any point when connecting the camera to a PC or othe firewire device did you plug the firewire in WHILE THE CAMERA WAS ON? This is BAD!!! I've seen this fry numerous firewire ports in the past (including my poor little deck camera). Barry's book even has a warning about this. When plugging a firewire into the camera, plug it in when the camera is OFF, then turn the device on and then turn the camera on. When you are done, first turn the camera off and then unplug the cable. Not doing this can destroy the firewire port.

David's and Barry's point is very valid. Absolutely, it is NOT recommended to connect device which is ON to Firewire port because it may fry the circuit in your camera or in the computer. With just enough of bad luck power line may get connected to data line or short-circuited. Damage could be done by static electricity also.

Make sure to test the port in your computer before plugging your HVX there again. You can ask computer specialist to verify the port (Computer Geeks may help). You can test it yourself with multimeter, at least to verify if there is something obviously wrong with the port, but be very careful with the probes!

Here is some useful information about 1394 ports: http://www.interfacebus.com/Design_Connector_Firewire.html

It always struck me a pointless to have the small firewire ports on pro level cameras, the big ones are sooooo much better it's just silly.

What's really need is a new connector with an optional latch to prevent accidental unplugging. For those who are worried about someone tripping over the cord and damaging something, they would not use the latch.

I agree. Small Firewire ports in pro equipment are one big mistake. OK, maybe manufacturers just want to stick with the standard, but at least they could hide ports deeper in the body for protection... Nope, everyone keeps them on the surface and all forces work against those tiny sockets when cable is plugged in. I don't get it. Why is it so hard for engineers to figure out better solution? Do they do that to cut costs? I'd gladly pay few bucks extra for the camera with this issue finaly resolved.

I'll say it again, I've never had problems with Firewire ports. I'm also now using right angled 4-pin cables, which are VERY secure and solve all the problems.

Ok guys ,,now i know better !!

The warranty does not cover blown up IE1394 ports :crybaby:

so it will cost me about 679$ or 541e to repair it ,,,holy crap !!

Guys be very careful with it ,,iknow i will !!

Which cable is the right one to get? From the picture, it looks like the ROTATED right angle would be the correct cable.

I've also read that the firewire cable should be connected to the PC first to dissipate static electricity, and then of course connect to the camera before power up.

4 pin to 4 pin is also recommended over4 to 6. There is apparently less burn out chance. considerably less. Also, yes, don't have the power to either your comp. or your camera on when you plug it up, to be extra safe.

that sux man..next time just say the camera was always off when u pluged in the firewire....

Plus be careful about static electricity, especially on dry frosty winter days when everything sparks around you when you move. It may not be an issue in Florida for example, but happens here in the North.
From my experience, even though I try to keep the humidity at decent level, quite often I get a shock when I touch metal part of my computer. Electric charges accumulate when I just move my chair. It can be dangerous to electronic equipment. It's better to ground yourself and your equipment for a moment before connecting it to your computer.

About right-angle Firewire cables, sometimes they can do damage also. Depends on force direction. Imo, the sockets in decks and camcorders should be more sturdy or at least better protected.
