Should I Buy A DVX?????

Although, in the ASC review of the first dvx100 they said that the dvx came very close to 16mm blown up to film, just slightly softer.

It really depends on how much you know what you're doing. I know I've seen a lot of DVX100 stuff in film school that ends up looking better than 16mm stuff simply because the students are much more comfortible with the technology and can get more out of it with their limited budgets.

seriously though, I don't have one but I would like to get one eventually, I hear they are pretty neat.

If you use those cameras, why are you on this site?

Just saw the DVX shot - David Chappelle's "BLOCK PARTY" on the free SHOWTIME weekend. Looked great. The DVX colour/gamma/filmlook always impresses me and I've never seen any HDV footage in downloaded clips, in person, or on tv, that can match those qualities. And that includes the downloaded clips of the new Canon A1 and Sony FX7/V1, which appear to follow the typical Canon/Sony "looks".

Seriously, the DVX rocks especially as it was intially designed a number of years ago now. But that statement I find strange. You need to check again.

Hi,

Frnakly unless you have done the side by side on the color, then you may not understand my post. The Canon may indeed have more resolution but it does not have the color. And the I-frame nature of DV recording is handled in a way that the long GOP of HDV cannot compare. So yeah maybe it is subjective but it is subjective based on my experience of watching the imaging made by the various cameras. So in my not on it is not HD, well, I mean it is not DVCPRO HD, which is the least expensive full fledged 4:2:2 imaging available that the algorithm doesn't get in the way of quality.

Yes that statement might be subjective too, but after being in this industry for now 35 years, I am a little opinionated about what people expect, and what they want and then watching them buy and complain.

Best,

Jan

I actually have had the pleasure of looking at side by side colour on the DVX, HVX, HD110 and xlh1 and honestly whilst I feel the 4:2:2 colour from the HVX DVCpro codec is more robust in cc, the initial images on the HD monitor did not tell the same story. Seriously the colour rendition coming from the DVX in my opinion was not better, its different and when all there was in this market was SD it was my choice by a long mile. Then once you factor in SDI or composite capture your in a totally different ballgame altogether.

SO I respectfully stand by my opinion on this.

there is no way I'd buy a HVX200. I don't want P2 at all. Not going to spend that much just to have 16:9 SD

And so you can stand by your opinion on it, just as I can, but just so that I am clear about what I was looking at, I was looking at the images after they both had been converted to I frame 4:2:2 HD footage, the HDV footage was not as colorful and the motion artifact that was a part of the HDV was still present. The DVX footage was beautiful without motion artifact and the color popped in comparison.

SDI out capture is not HDV, and you have changed the price of tea in china completely. That is not what I said. Sure you put a DVCPRO HD recorder on the output of the Canon H1, hey it looks so good they made their demo tapes that way. But that isn't what I was talking about. It was taking the DV tape from the DVX, putting it into the DVCPRO HD machine, or you could do it with Instant HD software, but this last would certainly take a bit longer, and upconvert it to HD. Then make the comparison.

So I do have reason for my opinion and I too stand by what I said. You do not have to agree with me, that is fine, but for you to say that I should not have it is not correct either. You seem to think that because you have not seen something, that perhaps it cannot be true. Well it it is true, and yes I am not the only one that has seen it.

Best,

Jan

Sorry Jan, but I cant see that I said you cannot have your opinion, all I said was I have mine and I stand by it. I even stated I respectfully stand on my opinion: meaning you have yours which I respect and I have mine that I stand by.

Anyway its always good to debate these things to a point.
