Matt Sconce- Stricken

Matt--

I know I have not reviewed Stricken yet and you probably didn't EVEN notice in the first place, but here's why:

I have downloaded a certain version of Stricken and I'm waiting to catch this entire cut without hinderance. I will definitely review your work. It's another I have been looking forward to!

Thanks Kholi! Download the one with the sound fix, linked through the link below my banner. You will like the sound mix alot more. And I did notice you hadn't reviewed it, but I was figuring, you would someday. i think it is awesome that you are helping people so much with honest reviews and look forward to when you get to mine. :)

I am trying to figure out the sound effect that "put most of the composer's work out of the movie"? Is it the heartbeat? I didn't mean to step on the score. I want the score to work with the sound effects and I believe it does. Everyone I show this movie to says the soundtrack is absolutely phenomenal, so I think it works very well. :)
Anyone else watch this yet? I appreciate the feedback!
Matt, maybe I haven´t expressed myself in the best way...what I meant is that lots of details that any composer usually spend a long time working is gone with a simple sound effect...it always happen no matter what kind of productiong, director or composer it is...maybe this details is only heard by the composers because they are the ones that pay attention in the arranging and orchestration...there´s nothing wrong with the sound effects of your movie...!!!

Oh I totally get it now!! Your music rocks my socks! Stricken would not be what it is without it!

I've also seen a lot of work around here that isn't getting the proper views that they deserve. It’s a shame because there are some truly amazing things that are not getting viewed. Stricken for one.

I am afraid that Stricken since it was marketed since the beginning as an exhibition only piece, was passed by, by many folks.

It's sad since Matt did tons of work preparing this, doing it, marketing it..

:crybaby: +:crybaby: =:crybaby: :crybaby:

It bums me out a little.

However Matt if you're reading this...dont worry man, Stricken will find its way out there, it doesnt need DVXuser so much.
Thanks...I hope so.

Matt I wouldnt worry about it honestly!!!! I mean...watch Stricken....watch by yourself....I am sure you ll get so much pleasure from knowing that you did this!!! And believe me, if you work hard to push this piece out there to festivals and contests and even companies ...man I would love to be in your shoes!!! I d be sending out copies ALL AROUND THE WORLD!!!

I wanted to post this PM as I think it will be helpful to others.

loved the look of your film what settings did you use?
what type of lights did you use?

Movie Master! I used the f5 setting. Lowered Master Pedestal to -7. When I was using the 35mm adapter, I had the detail at +5, Vdetail +7 and the noise Detail Coring at +7. When I did not have the adapter on, I had the detail set at -3, no vdetail, or detail coring.

Color temp -3, iris -2

I used three Britek Lights 1000 watt each, and a couple home depot lights. I made sure to always try and have the light coming from the direction it really would, but almost always made sure all the room lights were off so I could light exactly the way i wanted. I had a lot of light, so I had the ND filter on the first setting and iris at about 2 ish for all shots.
Check out this thread to see the before CC middle and after noise reduction.

I want to also add that I edited in premiere Pro 2 on a 24fps timeline.

this has the hitchcock feel of a movie great film this is a winner!
you trully rock!

I have been graced by the appearance of MOVIE MASTER!! And he has deemed Stricken to be a winner, so i believe my soul is safe after all.

Dude! Thanks for your comments! I hope your next movie goes well for you!:)

I think the look of this movie is just simply amazing. The texture caught by the DVX is probably the best of the contest.

The weakest element is the acting - and that's a damn shame. The REALLY INTERESTING THING is what can you do with pre-pro actors/SAG actors.

That's what's really interesting to me.

EDIT: Oh, and that opening scene in the bedroom is like a 20 million dollar horror movie!

I appreciate the comments so much! I understand about the acting. I like some of the performances, and wish I had directed some of them differently, but that is not able to be fixed now. I am happy with it for the most part and I am okay with that for my second movie. :) I am going to be checking out your writing and will let you know what I think. Thank you for the comments, and I hope more people get a chance to watch and review this movie!

matt your film is sweet!
I've been too busy to write detailed reviews so its taking me a while to get to everyone, but I'll be back with details

Awesome dude!! I appreciate it as I value your opinion MUCHO!! I definitely want you to critique my film like crazy as I trust what you notice and point out for improvement will make me a better filmmaker. Cheers!

Matt, I have just watched Stricken and am amazed at the quality of this work! It is just wonderful.

I have a few initial things that stood out to comment on like...

The TITLE interlaced in the headboard of the bed... AWESOME detail!

The camera "push" into Sarah are wonderful!

The "doctor's office" seems unnatural. Too bare and stark.

The doctor's line, "take your medicine" seems like it is accidently cut-off. Very abrupt. (I can understand if Sarah was cutting him off, but it sounds like you chopped it off in post.)

The doctor's make-up from young to old is outstanding. So subtle, but evident.

The reveal of the father over the tub is great!!!

The fight/struggle between the father and the doctor is too short/whimpy. (I understand that this is an accidental death, but I would love to have seen a bit more camera coverage, in particular c/u on the two hands wrestling with the knife.)

The red light in the hallway confuses me. I accepted it the first time. I don't know why it is there in the second and third time.

The restaurant scene is wonderful!!! I would change the young waitress friend's line/action. Her "excuse me" seems too formal for someone who rushes to the aid of a dear friend who has just passed out.

The reveal's of the bloody knife are awesome. Great work here!

The pool of blood with drips coming in is a GREAT SHOT!!!

The plate breaking is SPECTACULAR!!!

The SCORE is PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!

THE SCORE IS PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!!

The cinematography is PHENOMENAL!!!!!!

THE CINEMATOGRAPHY IS PHENOMENAL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Okay, I am going back to see this again RIGHT NOW!!

I will be back to give further review.

Ted

I'm confused by your post.

You seem unable to commit one way or the other on your feelings about this film.

so ...

TED, did you LIKE IT !!!!!???????

TED, DID YOU LIKE IT !!!!!???????

Sorry about that Jack, I had some initial thoughts that I wanted to post before I let a second viewing alter my opinion on some facts that I had observed.

My initial reaction to the film was that I thought that it was well done but I did not like the film because I thought that it was incomplete. If this was a 6 minute short and questions were unanswered, I'd accept it.

But given that this was a 14+ minute film, I wanted more explained.

That's why I jotted down some points without commenting on the film as a whole.

Now I am ready to do so.

I like many aspects of this film. I like the fact that Sarah is haunted by her father and we find out later, that her father is living through her. That was a twist that I didn't foresee.

I don't like the fact that Sarah's friend get's off'd for no aparent reason. It confuses me.

I don't like the fact that Sarah's dad is brutally hacking his wife to bits. (If in fact that was his wife.) I would loved to have had some flashes of what led to this. If it is a joy killing, I don't buy it. The guy obviously was with his wife for quite some time to have this 8-9 year old child. Perhaps the person in the tub was not the wife. Maybe the dad and young Sarah live alone and she caught him in one of his moments as a serial nut-job. I just don't know. It doesn't seem to be covered or explained.

I feel that this story has a lot of potential. There is a lot of discussion of "cutting films to meet the 6 minute rule." If this was done for that reason, I'd accept it. I would take it for what it is as a short story that has unanswered questions.

Infact, if you take away the 5 minutes of credits and if you tightened up some of the bedroom scene, you COULD have a 6 minute short. (Matt, I think that you should have entered this twice! Once in this state and once as a 6 minute short.)

All in all, I feel that the quality of this film is outstanding. I feel that Matt has HUGE potential as a filmmaker.

The story just felt unfinished.

So, to answer... Yes. I liked watching it. Compared to the many horror films I've seen over the past 5 days, this is one of my favorites!

But to give Matt honest feedback, since he is focusing on this as a submission to other festivals and considerations for a feature (I imagine), I have to say that I want a more rounded and complete story.

I hope that I am being fair. I really do think that the filmmaking aspects of this are at times amazing. Some of the shots are so pro! The interior of the car for example. What a beautiful shot.

I am going to hit send now, though I am afraid that I am not discussing this! :)

BTW, Matt...

GREAT JOB!!!

And CONGRATULATIONS on this work!

Ted

I am actually going to watch this now for a third time, because I really want to be fair in what I am discussing here.

And besides, I like watching this and that is a compliment in itself!
