"Put On A Happy Face" Movie Poster

Clowns freak me out...perhaps some suppressed childhood memory...

In terms of constructive criticism, it's hard to read that font on the balloon. My 2 cents.

ARGH HOLY fRackin' Smokes! Midget CLowns!

Man, this film was chaos! One thing after the next. you really start to feel for the guy. Super job in those respects. Technically.. Was your film rendered in fields? Lots of lines. Creepy man.. twisted creepy. :) But.. 'twas Fun to watch.

Matt Sconce's Review of Put on a Happy Face
SPOLIERS POSSIBLE!

Script
The story worked for its simplicity. People at carnival, go home, get attacked by supernatural clowns...then die.
Acting
The clowns were the best actors. I thought some of the guys and girls reactions were not believable, but they did pretty well.
Cinematography
I think the master pedestal could have been lowered a little to add more crispness to the image. The closeups on the clown were freaky. i liked the girl clown and the inflatable little one.
Editing
Okay, I think this all worked except for when the closeups happened with the cinflat-o-clowns. The cropped bars for the movie warped and twisted as well. This made me remember I was watching a movie. I think it would be more effective if just the picture warped leaving the masking bars alone.
Overall Impressions
Good short. I think this could be made into a GREAT B horror like Killer Clowns from Outer Space!

Review | POSSIBLE SPOILER ALERT! I watch the movies first time around strictly for enjoyment, second and third for review.

I am VERY VERY surprised this movie hasn't gotten reviews. Good or bad, this one had some serious work put into it and one of THE best locations I have seen yet. I'm proud of you for tackling the most CLICHE horror theme ever. And totally doing what I wanted to do as a theme.

Script - This, my friends, is a horror script through and throughout. Crazy killer clowns in all shapes and sizes (can I meet the female clown?). A beginning, a middle, and an end made it one entire short. Not pieces, not a prelude, an entire short. I would have loved to know why this came about, though. Did I miss something in the beginning? Did they bring home a balloon clown and it began to wreak havoc? Did this "main" clown follow them home? Was something cut out from the short that was in the script? I dunno, but I can tell you that it's not as linear as it could've been. Otherwise, I think you've got one of the more solid Horror-fest scripts.

Direction - Nice shot over the Carnival. Was that yours? The scenes that stood out as captured nicely were the clown beatdowns and one particular shot that looked really pro: The shot with your leading male climbing the staircase. That was a really good one. I also liked the mirror play with the balloon clown. There were probably a few things that could've been tackled better, but it looks like you did with what you could.

Acting - Dude your clowns rocked. they were chittering, chattering, laughing, chuckling, snorting-- they were CLOWNS for gahds-sake. Woo! That Midget was so freaking freaky. Running around on his little legs, disappaering into closets, jumping out of showers. And your leading guy really did well. He took those knives like a pro, and played dead well. Eyes wide shut. I didn't see a lot of your female actor, so I can't say too mucha bout her. But all of your actors were solid. ( Can I meet the female clown? )

Cine/Lighting - Not an extensive amount of lighting and I think it looked flat for the most part. Colors, to me, should've been saturated to the max. Or at least played with in a way that suits your story and adds life to the clowns. So many different hues and colors here, this should've been something that was brought out.

Editing - CRAZY ass editing. I don't know whether to say I disliked it or I loved it. It was really jarring and straight out-of-whack. The scare scenes were in tact, though! Midget-from-the shower, Clown-in-the-peep-hole, Clown-hand-from-beneath-the bed. You hit your scare beats pretty well, dude. I don't know if I liked the letterbox warping effect, but I can't say that I hate it either.

Sound - Sounded a little messed, but what I did notice is that you had your foley going on. One thing that stood otu above all was when he smacked his head against the cabinet and you heard that wet, meaty sound. NICE. The clown soundtrack did it's job. Crazy carnival music, couldn't have been any other way for the images.

Special Effects - Going to add costumes here. Your clown costumes were DOPE! VERY believable. There wasn't one single clown that I couldn't see being a clown at a carnival. Your blood squirting from the shoe was nice. in fact, your blood all around was good. Your clown parts blowing up like balloons sold the fact that these clowns were all just blow-ups from the "clown master", so to speak. I liked that. Nice touch, man.

Scariest Moments - Dang. Midget was scary no matter what. That dude was creepy as hell. From the shower, running away, approaching the girl. This dude was mad scary; please lock him in a cage. Clown in the peep hole was a nice touch, I liked. And the midget's voice was SO freaky. LOL. Wow!

Overall consensus - A few technical difficulties, but dude I can't believe people aren't commenting on this. You score high just because you had a solid concept and you moved through the paces. You were lacking in the visual department, as far as lighting and such went, but look at your Carnival location. Look at the pacing, the effects.

I'm sorry you aren't getting the attention you deserve, but rest assured you're on my top list. Congrats on a great entry. REcut it and let me see a better, tighter edit!

Amazing stuff! Top 5 in the disturbing/scary category for me!!! Crazy clowns in your house???? Laughing with carnival themes playing in your head???? And they have balloons??? Man get me outta here!!!!

It was one of the most enjoyable pieces. I was bothered with some changes in appearance of the image in the bedroom and the sound was flat....but the sheer horror of these clowns couldnt let me get out of there mentally. I think I ll have nightmares with this one.....

Dont know If i want to see it again honestly.....it scared me the most in horrorfest.....

Acting: Not bad. Clowns ACE!
Script: A little light but I love anything with clowns in so you got me hooked.
Direction: Uneaven in places but some really nice moments.
Music: Solid enough, but you’ve got clowns in it!!!
Editing: Choppy in places.
Lighting: A little flat.
Loved: Your setup. Clowns face through the peep-hole. The close-up of lead reaching the top of the stairs (nice man), The clown balloon dolls (Who made them?? Props +++), The midget (You’ve just made my festival), clown grab from under the bed, the foot on head (laughed out loud), the clown woman (WOW, no seriously hook us ALL up J), The midget, the clown womans costume, yeah you bought it just for the festival right?? My arse clown boy :)
Hated: The titles, the lens warp, some of the editing.
Overall: Loved it.

Seriously I loved it, great costume, some great gags. Ace.

Script
Better than a lot here. Very cliche, but fun nonetheless. There's nothing wrong with revelling in B movie status.

Acting
Clowns were awesome, but the victims left a bit to be desired.

Cinematography
Camera movement was good for the most part, but I'm having to go with Kholi here, the lighting was way way way too flat. The whole short needed a huge dose of colors, especially with the psychadelic video effects, which brings me to:

Editing
Good editing, but the warping of the masking bars make mark it down. Leave a mask bar over your video so you can do stuff like that.

Overall Impressions and other comments:
One of the more entertaining shorts here. Needed more lady clown.

I feel a bit bad seeing this, but one of the things about old horror movies was the whole sex thing....it would have been kinda neat to see her pretend to get ready to do something with him (distract him). Not asking for nudity or anything, but just ham up the sexuality of it...it's a very B movie thing to do. And with you introducing her with a shot of her bum I was expecting a bit more in that department.

Come on, you know the Freddy movies were all about the boobs after the first three. ;)

But yeah, I liked it despite the technical stuff.

the balloon was great(who made that) the story was freaky good. the clown actors were awesome! great ending the actor who said the last line"smile is a frown upside down just said it perfect, i love the shot of him the bald head and the wrinkles on his neck showing this massive head of a clown. the little person clown actor was very animated and the girl were all wonderful actors GREAT casting!

Thanks for the feedback, I love it!

The Final Edit turned out to be 15min. , I made a 6min edit for this horrorfest!

Thanks for all your support!

I am going to make this into a feature length Film!

Yeah, I will echo what Kholi and others said here. This is a VERY SOLID straight up 80's horror flick, and I really don't know why more people haven't commented. I would LOVE to see the 15 min final cut.

Fun, Fun stuff. That little clown FREAKED ME THE **** OUT!!!!

fat clowns, vertically challenged clowns, big breasted clowns, ballon clowns you have it all..I already hated clowns and this did not make it any better :) This was a fun film really enjoyed it...
