Hey Spidey & crew, I'll probably post more detail later when I have my notes in front of me, but I saw this thread pop up & decided to throw a quick comment on from what I remembered last night.

Visually it was GREAT. Excellent cinematography, lighting, etc. Editing also appeared extremely solid, but it's the kind that edgey enough (along with some of the camera work) that I imagine there are those who LOVE it and those who HATE it. Personally, I prefer edgey so it worked well for me.

(I agree)!

I'll have to watch it again, but initially the story didn't really grab me. It seemed like more of an excuse to just have a slasher piece, which you did a great job with the gore & FX. I actually cringed when the cheese/vegetable grater came out. YUCK! I didn't quite understand what she did to kill the fat masked guy in the basement ... maybe too quick for me to see?

Lastly, the opening VO ... I didn't want to hear so much explained like that, though I can understand with the lack of time that it helps to bring us up to speed quickly. Sometimes they work for me, sometimes they don't. This one didn't. For me, two of the things that stood out were that the voice sounded too young, <----Young, huh? *A note to Jeremy: Jeremy...first I'm too nice and now I'm too young...well, I guess they sort of go hand in hand. So, can you make me appear more old and mean? so it wasn't believeable to me. And I hope I don't sound like a stereotypical jerk, but the voice didn't match the face of the actress. If I had heard the slightest bit of an accent, then I wouldn't have been caught off guard when I saw her, but as it was I just didn't feel the voice fit what I saw visually. Gotcha! But, when you see an Asian actress/character in a film do you honestly always expect her to have an Asian accent?

I mean this is America, in the 21st century...regardless of where and when the film takes place! There are plenty of 3rd generation Asian Americans who don't have an Asian accent and are totally, in a sense, American!

I for one am...if you want to know a brief history, I was born in Mokpo, South Korea and was adopted at three months. I am an American and I truly realize this, everytime I study abroad or live for a long period of time in another country! My beliefs are American, my style of dress is American, almost everything about me is American...there's no denying that!

Yes, there are stereotypes and there is usually a grain of truth in each one...but when I look at a film of any genre I prefer to see the characters (whatever race) in a non-stigmatized, honest, and open way.

Anna May Wong sure did a lot for Hollywood as a pioneer actress, but there is still a lot of ground to be broken in terms of creating characters and roles for minority actors and actresses that don't conform to a stigma or sterotype.

You mentioned that it was an odd experience for you to see an Asian woman on screen and then to have to associate her voice, which sounded very American, with her character...I wanted Kim's voice to sound pretty mainstream American, for she grew up here. However, I did suggest to Jeremy that we try a couple of versions in the voice overs of Kim with a slight accent--just for variation.

I think it would probably sound pretty funny for an Asian woman to have a thick southern accent (I'm lucky I don't, but I live in the South) or even a NY accent...If she were to have a NY accent, a Brooklyn one would be the most probable, in my opinion.

But, there again is a stereotype (that most Asians who live in NY live in Brooklyn). For some reason, I think it sounds more natural though.

BTW--I have a pretty bloody good British accent. Not so great at Cockney slang--better at donning the regal Brit personae, actually! Also, pretty well-versed at the French accent...Just ask the people I worked with on the shoot with the Brazilian models. They all had accents, so I decided to 'wear' one too! ;o) wink!

So, back to the discussion...
If I ever "make it" as an actress--and the definition varies--then I hope to chart new progress for the Asian American today...And, in particular for the Asian American woman...

Since I've not seen SAW or HOSTEL, I can't say for sure if this is one of the films folks were saying it reminded them of or not, but it DID remind me of a film where these teens ended up upon some cannabilistic (sp?) backwoods folks ... think it may have been called WRONG TURN? So with that I dug the mentally screwed up guy in the field that got it first with the axe ... great performance.

To sum it up:
Great camera, lighting, editing, makeup, VFX, sound.

Also very solid performances in the acting, except for the guy getting butchered in the basement ... felt he was a hair too casual for what I would imagine most would be like in that situation. Hmm...interesting point!

Story lacked the most for me with the opening VO, and again just seemed like more of a showcase for the stuff that really did work such as camera, lighting, editing, VFX, etc. ...

Good review!

Did I mention Spidey was like effin 12 years old ?

That pisses me off. (In a good way)

yeah, seriously! if he ever makes it to Hollywood, he's going to be the youngest ever critically-acclaimed H-wood director!

I'm not so pissed off though! I support him all the way. (The kid's got talent)!

Excuse me, but I think that's about the stupidest f*****g thing I've ever heard on this board.

Sorry, spidey . . . didn't mean to crap all over your thread. I was very, very, very impressed with your film! Great cinematography! Love the high-speed photography! I thought your female lead was EXCELLENT! To me, at least among the films I've viewed so far, this one clearly leads in "Best of Genre." I'll have to watch it a few more times to catch all the cool things you did in it!

Wow! Just watched Reunited again. Lots of things to watch. Again, terrific lighting and cinematography. Love that Leko, ellipsoidal, Source 4, whatever you wanna call it in the "chair" room. Loved "chainsaw lady." She was great! The "punks" were great too! Pitchfork through the window--awesome. Be-heading in hallway--incredible lighting. Fisher-Price xylophone--excellent! Undercranked straircase shot--bitchin'. Time-lapse photography--cool! You've shown a mastery of your tools, and were fortunate to have a great cast. Very, very nice. Best of genre! Congrats!

Someone once said, "Some movies are neat, others suck." Yours didn't suck.

You are way hot in this picture!

Last film I watched and it came as a surprize finding out that I left the best film in the fest last! Gongratulations. The effects were pro as everything in the film.

To me it looks a too expensive production to find out how to compare it with all the other films.

Acting: Solid, your leading lady has a real interesting look about her.
Script: You know this is the only thing that pulled it slightly down for me, and I say it ever so slightly. Just wish you had tried something out of the norm.
Direction: One of the best I’ve seen, interesting and sharp.
Music: Nice with some grizzly Foleys.
Editing: Sublime. A style all of your own.
Lighting: Man I love the look you got, those yellows are astounding. Can’t say enough about your stylings.
Loved: Your opening, best of the fest (till now), the make-up, your shot choice, the feel of the damm thing, The chainsaw shot (boy did that look unearthly), those cutting up Foley’s (euugh, damm they were nice), the ear! The grater was inspired (don’t think I’ve EVER seen that before!), Barbecue line, How much blood you guys used J
Hated: The fisher price king’s voice, wanted that granny to hobble :) those damm tiny credits!
Overall: Been really looking forward to this and you didn’t disappoint. The story could have been ever so slightly tighter/ more original but I don’t want anyone reading this to think badly about the film. It truly stands on it’s own two feet and spits in the eye of budget filmmaking. Top job!

J.P.

i appericate this guys... sorry no respons shoot a music video today for some peoples... ill respond soon!

Kinda sorry I said that now. Sorry, pal--I know you didn't mean anything bad by it. Okay, Spidey, back to more chatter about your AWESOME entry!
