Hey Susan,

Well it's orchestral film music, using a similar setup to most thrillers..strings, some woodwinds, dark percussion, a few light horns etc.

yeah there's a great look here.
just saw (no pun intended) trailer for the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre and it has that gold/green CC as well -- very hip.

Reunion by Jeremy Hyler

Script
I liked the build up to the story with the voice over in the beginning. But in the end it didn’t really go anywhere for me. It kind of reminded me of The Hills have Eyes.

Acting
Ok, the lead didn’t fit. She was too nice. The friends were there for like 15 seconds and then gone.

Cinematography

Your look was good. Reminded me of CPU, which isn’t a bad thing, as this is your style. I really liked the look.

Editing
Felt very disjointed throughout the film. Again, the film felt undeveloped and it just ended.

Score
Great score. Chris again did a fantastic once again. I liked the dark strings here as well.

Overall Impressions
I can’t say I wasn’t disappointed. Your film looked great, but fell short in story and acting in my opinion. You are an excellent DP, and it showed with this film.

Spidey,

I'm going to agree with Brandon and say that you are a great DP, there are some phenomenal looking shots. My overwhelming thought was that we got a reader's digest version of what could have been a great 30-35 minute movie (beats me, it still could be). The editing seemed very episodic and jumpy, to the point of distraction, as if to draw attention to itself.

I could have used a little more development in the characters, in lieu of the voiceover in the beginning, a lot of that could have been given as a synopsis instead of chewing up seconds.

Don't get me wrong, this is one of the best films in this contest, and at times looked as good as films like hostel. But it is as if you wrote a 30 min movie and took the best 6 min out of it, and that's where i find the downfall of this short.

That being said, I'd love to see something longer from you guys, so you can focus more on developing a story. Great Job.

yeah editing wise we tried something different. like limey twin peaks thing.... i dunno bring something different. ill give you guess a break down after the contest.

Hi -

Nice job overall - here are my notes:

Intro was nice while I was listening to it, but I feel like the rest of the film kind of ran away from the feeling it set up. The delivery of the voiceover was a little strange, though. The pacing didn't contribute well to the "grandiosity" you usually get in a VO.

Everything looks really great, so kudos to you as a photographer, and same for effects.

However, I feel like it was a collection of pretty/gruesome/cool images that didn't serve the story or carry it along in a very effective manner. Plus, the extremes and quantities of violence at times seemed a tad unnecessary. I think this montage of gruesome pretty shots w/o much of a story would have been carried out more effectively if you set the whole thing up as an almost funny, dark movie, poking fun at the genre itself. Maybe with a more upbeat score and feel to the whole thing. But as is, it just feels a little forced. Then the ending is kind of anti-climactic. I'm anxious to hear what your motivation was in doing it this way.

You had a really great cast of characters. Felt like backwoods, banjo strummin' mountain folks. Now that's what I'm thinking - put the soundtrack to Deliverance behind this, and you have an entirely different feel that would better accentuate the extreme violence.

GREAT costumes and locations. Best torture dude I've seen so far.

Good work.

Oh, and does he say "my feet smell like BBQ"? If so, I think I have to proclaim that as best line of the fest.

First of all let me say that you are very talented!

Production wise I think this is also up there with the best looking entries. My problem is similar to everyone else. It was just overkill. I think if you could just hold yourself back a little this would have been far more effective. As it stands it seemed like a longer short rapdily condensed into 6 minutes, and as such became confusing in the process. By the end I was lost and so did not really care about the charatcers.

Look, Im no-one to be making judgements on other peoples work! But when you see talent such as yours I feel I have to comment...This would have been a contender if it was just a little more simple and had been given time to breathe. sometimes less is more, you can keep your style but just give the audience time to think.

you're 21? You're going to do well, there's no question.

EDIT

I dont feel I gave this film enough credit on my first post. I've watched it a few times and 'confusing' is the wrong word to use. I liked it a lot, I just felt that too much happened in a short space of time or should I say I dont feel we got to know any of the characters at all. I loved the mental guy playing the piano! thats was a really nice moment. Lots of fantastic and frenetic visuals here.

I still believe you will go far.

ONE MORE EDIT:

Oh yes the cheesegrater had us in stitches. You know how to rub it in!

Damn fellas! I really dug this film! I kept waiting when she was going to be quiet and get on with the on screen acting. I'm glad it wasn't narrarted all the way through.

The look.. wowa.. some very cool shots, but I can't say I'm too keen on all the washed out colors and saturations. It.. along with the visuals made me sick. And because of that.. well done. :)

Score... Fantastic job Chris! You captured the chaos and the ambience perfectly.

the VFX of the head and chainsaw.. man. Fantastic! And.. of course the story is just one of those you hear about, but would be so bizzare to actually see in real life. I'd hate for some whacko's with a mental retardation kid chillin on my property. I know this is so bad, but i laughed out loud as that entire scene took place with the teddy bear. I didn't care for the audio fx on his voice though. I think it would have been just as strong without it.

I'm scared to see hostel, so I can't compare. Hell, i'm too damn scared to see any movie like that, so I'm kinda out of the loop and league here.

cheers for the entry and getting it completed on time.

Your movie looks kick ass Jeremy, trust me :)
Like the big chainsaw neck cut.
Some parts really built some dread and others were a bit rushed, but I hate even mentioning that due to the six minute thing.
I get the feeling there is an extended cut of this in the works. If so I'm looking foreward to it.
Again looks primo and you have all the elements here.

This was a fun ride, guys. I guess I could say stuff about the story, but in the end, it played pretty much like Tarantino's first two films, meaning a sort of montage of his favorite stuff from the movies he loves. And it was pretty fun.

Not the cheese-grater!!!!! No!!!!!!!! I did laugh at that. :)

Well, jeremy, I was expecting a kick-ass flick and you delivered but (like many have said) it felt rushed and like a mish-mash of scenes from a feature, not a well-put together 6 minute piece.

The cinematography, effects, sound, acting and locations were all top-notch(as expected). The only thing that brought this down was the story.

The basement scene just was too much a blatant ripoff of Hostel for me.

I digged it, but I like CPU a whole lot better becuase the story was there for the time limit.

You're a talented filmmaker, Jeremy. Keep at it.
