:)I am finally in a position where I can afford either the canon A1 or sony V1u!!!:)

:)I now have $4500 burning a hole in my pocket!!!:)

:)It's gonna be really hard waiting for panny to unveil something new. Heck, it'll be hard waiting for the Sony! Double heck, I'll probably just run out and get me an A1!:)

No seriously, I gotta learn this thing quickly. So some questions:

Can I do timelapse in camera? If so, how?

I'll probably buy an Expodisc for whitebalance but are there any for sure filters I should get:

Polarizer (linear or circular?)
UV (do I need this if I have the pol on)
contrast filter?
enhancing/intensifier?
color compensating?

I'm rather proficient in AE so if doing it in post is as good in quality then I won't spend the money.

Also...do all CCD camcorders pick up infrared light? My gs-150 does. If so, whats the best way to build an infrared light source for night vision (africa, not paris).

Well, kinda.

There are some nightvision cameras out there (security or sony). But the truth is that ANY ccd camera is sensitive to infrared light.

You can buy IR leds from radio shack, so I'm thinking I'm just gonna make a small camra mounted IR light for night vision journal-entries.

Or just screw the DIY and buy this or something like it. :)
 
I meant the CATAPULT drive thingy.

I emailed them and am currently awaiting a response. I think 300 for that and 300 for a 30gig+ iPod still comes in cheaper than the current Firestore solutions.
 
oh that, yeah, it is cool.

I would say screw ipod. Get yourself an external Sata 3gb/s drive enclosure that has a USB 2.0 plug.

I have two in the waiting for that sucker. Each holding a 250gb hdd. Then I just have to build a battery power supply at the right voltage and amps and I'm set to go.

Put the HDD and this converter in a backpack and film HDV straight to disk holding 250gb before any transfer is necessary.

Super cool, get back to me if you hear when. I'll probably be one of the first to buy.
 
There's a simple workaround. Buy a poweful notebook, connect external HDD for extra storage and capture directly to your NLE :-) Power all that stuff from car battery (at least 40Ah capacity) and you're good for hours, even with NightVision. Put everything in your backpack (make sure the battery is on the bottom). Backpack will provide nice counterbalance. Take it from me, from my belly and the camera in front of me ;-)

Canon A1 vs Sony V1 is tough choice. I made my mind already. There are some decisions in every man's life that we have to make on our own like for example:
- marry or not to marry and which woman
- which (Canon) camera to buy
- rewind your DVDs or spend $20 on DVD rewinder :-)

You can't possibly be serious...can you?

A car battery? Do I even need 12 volts for anything?

I'm thinking if I omit the laptop, and go with a firewire harddisk straight to the camera, then I only have to power the harddisk. Probably wouldn't take much voltage, then it's a matter of how many amps it draws and how many amp/hours I want to carry.

A car battery?! I'd like to see an X-ray of your spine!
 
I was not 100% serious about car battery and backpack, but I've seen people use car batteries in less mobile applications. They are heavy but still way lighter than generators.
What you're thinking about sounds very much like Silicon Imaging, but they actually use specialized laptop built in the system.
