Need Advice on buying HVX200 and other stuff

hello everyone..

I am Sadi from Bangladesh. I think I am the only Bengali guy here..hehe..!! this is my first post...:) I been reading this forum for some time and its a great one..!! I am planning to set up my own production house soon and very much interested to buy this HVX200 camera. Mostly we will be working on TVC, short film and sometime maybe small budget feature films.

For my post production I am getting the New G5 Mac pro but I am not sure which VTR to use for grabbing footage from HVX. I will be using the deck to record from sony HD camcorders also but the problem is I cant afford to spend more than $5000 on deck. So can anyone suggest which deck supports various recording formats including DVCpro n all.

I need to buy 35mm film lenses and adapter also ..so which brand do you think would be best for shooting feature film..?

I need other accessories also as mattbox, tripod and also steadycam for glide shots...but I am not sure which ones would be better for HVX..

So pls everyone..help me out a bit to make the right choice. I am not a professional yet but I am learning alot from the members of this forum.

thanks

Welcome Sadi! There is a ton of information here on everything you're wondering about. Using the Search function, try looking up words like dvcpro deck, 35mm adapter, etc.

BTW, you most likely won't be using a deck at all to ingest HVX footage... HD footage anyway.
I use the Glidecam Smooth Shooter with Glidecam 4000 Pro. It's a nice budget stabilizer, but if you have the money, I hear the Steadicam line is amazing. I bet Mikko will chime in about this. ;)

I would also recommend getting The HVX Book too.

Thanks alot for your warm welcome..:) I did a lot of search but I couldnt find any specific name of any deck to record dvcproHD format. I need it cause of the production house where other cameras will be used too but I wanna use it for HVX also as I might be using Tape for recording most of the time. My budget is around $5000. Most ppl here use Sony HDV, thats why I need a deck which can be used for all HVX format and also Sony HDV. Do you know of any source where I can get some info on it..?

peace

You cannot record HDV to a DVCPRO HD deck, and a new DVCPRO HD deck @ 5k is not on the market AFAIK. Your tape option is basically the AJ-HD 1200.

That's a 25k + pro-deck which doesn't use hdv tapes at all.

For the DVX You'll use one of three recording solutions for HD:
1. P2 cards - which you download to a computer
2. Recording to computer via NLE (a laptop will do)
3. Recording to some "smart" HD device like Firestore-100 pr Cineporter when it comes out. (I don't mention Citidisk as it seems noone have any success....)

The HVX records to DVCPRO HD, not HDV, which is considered a main selling point for many of us who chose it. But that again means that you cannot record to HD digitally. You could connect the component out to a HDV deck, though, but you'd lose most of your HVX 's advantages on the fly.

P2 means you don't need a deck as there are no moving parts to degrade or break down over time. Instead of spending that $5000 grand on a deck, you'll get either a couple of P2 cards (You can get 4 gigs are now only $550) and either a P2 store or a cheap laptop for offloading. You could also invest in a FS100 ($1800) if you don't want to worry about having to offload during a shoot.

Ya man, P2 is the way to go, the workflow is awesome. Also, I recommend Hysonfilms.com to get your mattebox. They work great, look great, and are actually affordable (also check out the follow-focus sytems.) I have a Redrock M2 setup on my HVX and it works great! Anyway, good luck w/ your setup!

Hey Attar-khoje

I am happy to hear that you are planning to set up a production company. Welcome to the club. Now, just to clear some things up, I would like to explain some things to you, if you allow me.

1... Sony and Panasonic are rival companies. They each produce their own formats that are neck and neck in terms of performance. But they both make sure that you, as a consumer of their technology, have to commit all they way and choose a side. So it is sort of like a religion.

2... In these competing religions the issue of using a tape as a recording medium has been put into question. Panasonic says "No More Tapes"... and Sony says "Buy My Tapes."

3... In the long entrenched world of post houses, the use of tape, like you mention, has been gospel and daily prayer for as long as anyone can remember. So you are right that in order to aproach these old-fashioned post houses you will need to arrive with some kind of tape.

4... That is, of course, unless you anounce to them that you already did some of the work for them. You then announce to them that you will be arriving with a hard drive with all the clips already digitized and synced to the format of their choice. Well, this is where the P2 format comes in as it already does that from the first stage of acquisition.

5... So, to answer your question, with your 5000 bucks you might want to look at purchassing a couple editing packages, like Final Cut Pro and Avid, learn them both, and invest in several external hard drives which will become the 'tapes'. This way you'll be sure to be able to output most of the standard file formats that post houses work with, including Quicktime, WMA, just plain EDL lists, or whatever.

So, to recap... TAPE IS DEAD... (At least for people in this sub-forum). I don't think I'll ever buy a tape deck again (Even our audio is captured to disk directly using the Fostex FR-2 and 5 Gig cards.)

Tape will die thats for sure....I can smell it once more advanced technologies comes out. But in my country nobody uses HVX200 ..lol I think I will be first one to use it in production. our media industry is really lacking in quality. There are not much educated film makers here. Mostly are those who used to be crew members. They are more facinated by how expensive camera they are using rather than quality..lol Anyway..I am willing to change it once n for all..:D

Thats why I been doing alot of research on camera as my budget is low. U will be surprised that our film makers use 35mm Film cameras but their output is worst than home video..I have no idea what they do in the post......haha

Anyway...other than my HVX facination...most ppl here uses sony HDV cameras....Its all interlaced. There are only few ppl who are producing some good stuff using film cameras while they do their pos in India(Bombay) or singapore. but I am gonna change that.....I will be using FCP, AE and Premiere.

the responses from this forum has been helping me alot..Regarding the adapter..I have noticed different ppl chose different brand but M2 is most praised I guess...I have read in another forum thats its a bit harder to adjust comparing to other brands...is it true..?

Hello Attar-Khoje,
I have bought the geardear mattebox and use it on my HVX200 and on the M2. I´m very satisfied with it and recommend it everybody who needs a unexpensive one. It´s very versatile, you can adapt it to your needs. Btw, I found it easier to work with only the hood set-up with masks, without french flag and the sidewings...
And not only the mattebox is really nice, they have other options for a baseplate you can put rods in front and out of the back and other nice stuff like the backpack. The baseplate you can see on your picture is very nice especially for the HVX200 because of the matching height for the M2 (you don´t need a shim kit anymore).

thanks alot marc for replying. it does look very versatile..:) but as u said ..u found it easier to work without french flag and sidewings..!! so can u tell me what problem u faced with those..? are they very fragile ? Is it easy to attach with the lense..?

I am thinking of buying brevis35 adapter, do u think there would be any problem to balance with the baseplate? and I am quite ignorant in this matter, can u pls tell me whats a shim kit ? :)

thanks again for ur post

can anyone tell me if its possible to use any laptop as a field monitor and if its possible to record directly to a laptop HDD without p2 cards..? And I might be using M2 or Brevis adapter and I heard they flip the view up-side down..:( getting an external monitor might help this matter..so is there any cheap monitor out there which can solve this problem..? pls recomend if possible..:)

thanks

Hi, do you happen to know where can I get the Redrock Revolution software (the laptop monitoring software) its beta is out and I really need a monitor for my DVX100AE, since its a Pal camcorder a normal TV doesnt work. Thanks
