Spec TVC shot w/ HVX200+Movietube

I kinda disagree with everyone. Sure this is about death, but it embraces the aspect of dealing with it and moving on - a very positive message in my opinion.
this commercial will stay with someone, thus proving to be successful...

I'm impressed you were able to get that thing into the back seat of a car for the in-car shot.

In case anyone is wondering, here are some pictures of an HVX200 sitting on a Movie Tube:

Anyway, job well done. Good concept (very touching), and nicely edited. Gotta zoom in a bit more, but with HD, you can always crop without losing resolution.

OM Gosh ! its looks like a ugly version of a Canon XL :)

What does that have to do with MasterCard though?

And who charges their gas and small expenditures on a credit card with a presumably high interest rate, instead of using a debit card?

I mean the guy is already grieving the loss of his girlfriend or wife, and getting a bill with a 19% percent interest rate is going to be even more depressing.

It has good production values but not all that well thought out.

He had to spend over 600 dollars to dump some ashes in a body of water??

Why not just keep them, lol??

I'm sure the local lake would have done the job.

Or then again, he could just keep them, lol.

It does look good, but needs more work on the script.

Wonderfully done ! Looked gorgeous.

Altough the subject matter is what it is; it work's and it takes cojones to do it.

Bravo !

It's a spec commercial not a Full feature movie but i'll take a crack at your questions.

who charges their gas and small expenditures on a credit card with a presumably high interest rate, instead of using a debit card?

Maybe somebody that has a low interest rate or is trying to build credit

I'm sure the local lake would have done the job.

Maybe the ashes was of his wife and the lake is where they went on their first date. Or maybe that's his sister and that's lake behind their old house where they grew up and shared so many memories

Huh ?

You're reading into this a bit much, I think.

I liked it, and like everyone else has said, it id done VERY well, and VERY professional. But the story is laking the funny or light harted sentiment that MC usually uses. I know it is spec. so for demo Reel purpose, it's perfect.

Now onto the MovieTube. I dont get it.. Why does the HVX have to be 45% cocked like that? Just looks weird and like you said (which I chuckled at) Looks like an ugly XL series :)

I put EVERYTHING on my Amex. I have a 0% intrest rate. And take advantage of the points. I need to get as many as I can. dont know why but I do. DROP IT.. :) I even pay bills with it, if I can.

John is 100% right. It takes some "Stugots" to get out and do something different and to do something at all :)

I know it has something to do with the movietube not showing stuff upside down like other adapters. Also it makes it a little less long and bazooka-like compared to the other designs :)

Hey I really liked it... you went with your gut instincts... some people didn't like it, but a lot of people do... remember 'fight club' was absolutely panned when it came out (just check the reviews on the DVD insert) but is now a modern day classic.... david fincher said after the whole experience: "If your not pissing some people off then your doing something seriously wrong".

Good work mate, keep changing things up!

BTW the Movietube looks crazy... must be awkward in hand-held!

handheld

handheld

Hey folks, i really appreicate all the support regarding the concept. I continue to get feedback from a lot of different people and it seams people really hate it for our depressing them, or they really like i because it touches them. I am grateful for all reactions though! Thanks again.

Regarding handheld with the Movietube. Sure, it does take a bit of getting used to because the HVX had to sit so high and the LCD is now one must look up slightly to see the LCD if you were using a conventional shoulderbrace to do handheld. Since the 95% of the MasterCard spec was done handheld, we have to confront this issue with all kinds of makeshift ways. For example, inside the car, I had to pretty much take off all the 'extra' stuff like the mattebox, onboard monitor, follow focus... to fit into the passenger seat and the back, but I find that the whole setup is not bad once you figure out a way to keep it close to your body while operating. I just used a couple of u-shaped head cushions(like the ones people would bring onto a plane.) to wrap around my arm supporting the camera and one cushioning the back against my chest. after that it was pretty easy. Kind of like holding a baby. haha.

For other shots, like the ones in the gas station, I just used a shouldbrace I built out of things I found at good old Home Depot and it worked great. The only trick in it is that the camera has to sit quite a ways forward because the LCD is so high it would be difficult to see if the movietube was literally on my shoulder.

Anyway, I guess every system works one way or another, just have to get used to it right?

Thanks and have a good one!

Kevin,

Wow.

That kind of gave me chills. Seriously! Great video.

Mastercard would be lucky do have you work for them.

Wonder how she died? She may have been seriously in debt and couldn't take the hardships of life any longer. Happens.

Nice looking footage.

LOL!! Yeah probably why she died. The concept and composition and editing were great. I mean to say technically it was shot and executed well. But the movietube is a rubbish piece of equipment as compared to other adapters. I tested it a while ago and was very unimpressed. Hence why your footage is very soft looking.

HAHAHAHAHHA THE COMMENT OF THE WEEK!!

I've never even heard of a movietube.. LoL. It looks sick, though.

Nice work, man. I have no qualms about the subject matter at all. It's touching, honestly.

I also checked out your site. You worked along side Fred Lumiere on "Tomorrow is Today" huh? Awsome looking footage on that venture. Hats off and I expect to see some theatre releases with your name tagged on it.

Good luck

Great Spec spot!

Love the look of the entire spot. Was that in Lens filter or post look? have to agree with one other post that the Dead girl ending is a bit hard. But i understand the concept. The rest is Great !!!!!

Great spot!!

it had a very fluid, professional feel and restraint in the right places. As most have said it's probably not something that MC would buy into, but it's a spec spot and you told your story very well. Plus, people die in real life all the time. :)

Can't wait to see what you come up with in the future.

Oh, she died. Now I get it. I thought he just got a bunch of sand in his business card holder, in which he also carries a picture of his daughter(?) or girlfriend(?).

All kidding aside, this thing looks gorgeous. I love the composition of the shots, the music, the editing. Everything was fantastic!

I agree that MasterCard would never run this because of the downer thing. And that's sad. We've become such a prozak (sp?) nation. I'm so sick of happy endings. None of us will end up with one, so why not run a commercial like this? Damn them all to hell!!!!

Sorry. I've gotta get this soapbox back to the rental house by six or I have to pay for another day.

P.S.: As someone who's written copy for years, I'd change the copy at the end to read, "Bringing someone home" instead of "Bringing somebody home." It's subtle, but the word "body" in this instance is a tad ghoulish.
