frame rate problems in fcp 720p24

I shot a bunch of stuff at 720p 24, but none at the standard 24 fps. we shot at 22, 26, 28, 30, and 48. when i import the footage into final cut it doesn't recognize the frame rate at which we shot it at. It converts the footage to 59.98 fps. I set the project up as a dvcpro 720p24 project, started a new sequence, but the sequence settings can't be changed to anything other than 720p60. I used the frame rate convertor, but the optioins are rather limited there, and don't match up to what our camera reports say we shot at. Does anyone have a solution? similar problem?

The problem is that we shot it at 720p24, but we used the variable framerate (undercrank/overcranking). Our fps speeds in this mode were mostly 22fps and 48fps, and specifically my question is how to get fcp to recognize these framerates.

That is what SurJones is telling you -- those framerates are shot over (relative to) 24p.

If you were to shoot at 48 fps and set the framerate in FCP to 48, then you wouldn't get slow-motion because there would be one frame in the video for every frame in the timeline.

that would be great if everything was shot at that rate, unfortunetly its a music video and not all the clips are the same rate. i just read apple's workflow for the hvx/p2 and they say that variable frame rate stuff will show up as 59.94 which is what im getting. however, the footage plays back in real time not at a variable frame rate.

FRC is only reallly used for 24p not 24pn. is this correct? since frc removes duplicate frames which 24pn doesn't have, no need for it in 24pn mode

i did run it throught the frame rate convertor, but it only offers three speeds, 23.98, 29.97, and 59.94. but we shot most the footage at 22, and 28 fps in 720 24p mode not pn.

so basically i can get the footage shot at 48 fps to work because i can convert from the 60fps (59.94) to 29.97 to obtain what i want (essentially 48 to 24) for slo-mo. but because of the limited ability of the frame rate convertor nothing else is really working for me. so i must be doing something wrong in the work flow. im running fcp 5.1.2. has anyone gotten their variable frame rate footage to conform in final cut?

Dude, you have a problem, and I, and a couple other people, told you pointed you to my answer. IT IS THE ANSWER. You DONT and SHOULD NOT run those clips though the cinematools.

Go and do what I said. Then FILE > NEW PROJECT and then IMPORT P2>

They will import into the timeline . NO CONVERSION NEEDED. YOU ARE SHOOTING 24p, WHETHER OR NOT it is in differnt FRAMERATE, IT IS STILL 24P. Just do what we have said.

In Final Cut Pro do an easy setup for DVCPro HD 720p24

This now gives you everything lined up for a 23.98fps workflow. This is exactly what you want. If you see 720p60 for the compressor that is okay, that does not impact the fact that you're cutting at 24 fps. That is the compressor you want.

When you load your footage it will come in as 59.98, that's how all variable frame rate footage comes in, even from other Panasonic cameras. That is fine, you're in good shape with that. It doesn't matter what variable setting you chose, it uses a blanket 59.98 to import it with, so don't fret.

As for the frame rate convertor, you don't select what you used when you shot it, you select what you want the footage to become. It doesn't care what rate you shot it at, as long as it is something overcranked or undercranked, it will deal with the rest on its own as soon as it simply knows its a variable frame rate. So select the 23.98 option in the VFR. After it has processed and created the new clips for you, try cutting those into your 23.98 timeline and voila!

How did you get the camera to shoot at 28 fps? My HVX doesn't have that setting.
