im a cg artist using softimage xsi and its inbuilt mental ray renderer. i would love to see that commercial but the server says its bandwith is exceedet.
however, all pictures showing the camera are rendered. looks like maya to me, or 3ds max, and i dont really like both apps. the first time you try xsi you stick with it. best 3d app at this time. modeling-/rendering- and animation-wise.
the gallery pics, well, its just that we've never seen such a clear picture at that resolution. the dynamic range is so wide and the grades so soft, it looks allmost painted. i think this is what made matthew think it's cg.
that 4k shot looks brilliant. there are guys in the industry that can render a face like that but in the end it would take alot of time to render an animation at 4k with that amount of detail like sss and displacement maps.
red footage (full or downrezed) will be great for post work. can't wait to pull a key from that footage or track the camera, should work like a charm..
Sorry this is a bit off topic but I'm just curious about your background John. Did you start out directing live action commercials or did you come from a CG background? This is the area of the industry I'm most interested in with the melding of cg and traditional film theory. I'm always interested to hear the stories of those who have succeeded and which direction they came from whether it be more of a VFX supervisor position or a live action commercial director.
Smoke and mirrors, very funny.. The user who said the out of focus areas looked 'painted' was bang-on.. a better way to describe how I was feeling about the aesthetics of the images from the mysterium. It seems like a mysterium image would go very well with cg.
Somebody shoot some dirt or a pile of litter!!
Re: cgi-look: I wonder what they called it when it became possible to create movies in color. I'm sure somebody complained that the color films lacked some aesthetics. And just as some complained when we went from LPs to CDs, I'm sure somebody will complain when it now becomes possible to create movies with sufficient resolution and without noise (or no film grain at least). But if you like noise or lack or color it will still be an option, you will just have to consciously choose to add it. The red one will eliminate or lessen some problems, giving good directors time to think about more interesting problems. Bad directors that can't cope with the new possibilities or that feel threatened by the lowered barrier of entry of cause won't like this.
(This is not at all meant as an attack on you.)
I've noted that you had used vray to render. I've only started to create some 3D models, and I'm interested by vray, as it seems to be more friendly than mental ray.
Just to have an idea...how many times did the render took? On how many of computers?
