Ladylike - Music Video

Dude, great job.. The colors were amazing.. The night time stuff could use a little re-working, but if it looks good on you monitor, then don't listen to us.. It's just the rest of it is SOOO strong that it you really shouldn't end with it.. End with some amazingly colorful shot or brite shot in the club or the photo shoot.. Remember, people always remember then end of something.. :-)
Great job though!! Great edit..

Excellent video, Kenn! The colors were really poppin'. That's an outstanding look you got from the HVX. It's a shame that the more grainy shots didn't compress well. I feel you on that. I had some similar issues on some recent super8 stuff I shot. These codecs can't handle grain at all.

Glad u guys are enjoying it.

The night-time stuff seems to be the only part that doesn't really compress well. Looks better in SD or HD... but yea, I would've been nice to have some lights out there to make things pop a bit more.

I wanted to end with the colorful stuff, but the artist wanted to end with the street stuff - oh well ;-)

Steadicam was used in the opening, the street stuff, walking thru the club and the bridge section in the hallway. Wasn't really a 'Steadicam' per se - but a 'Steady-Tracker'.

The opening stuff was just available light with a photo-light that the photographer had in his studio.

Again, thanks for the feedback!

Sorry that I ask again, but how did you focus?
Everything seems so crisp an clear, but the camera is moving constantly...
Was it only the focus assist you used?
And did you use an on-camera light for the CUs?

Oh sorry... I just used the focus assist. For some reason the focusing with the HVX doesn't give me any problems. No on-camera lights for the CUs, the stage lights at The Gig are just amazing.

The thing I love about the HVX is not only the latitude but that the extreme saturation holds up. I usually end up doing a lot of color correction in post to get my desired look, but on this project, I dialed in 90% of the look in camera. The club stuff isn't really corrected at all - except for the few shots that were a bit too dark and we didn't have time to light.... including that out of place dark grainy shot of her walking up the stairs.

Very nice work Kenn. Congrats on a well made made video and having good, well-rounded skills in directing, shooting and editing. I may see you at the lafcpug and would love to hear about how you made it.

Kenn.. again good stuff. I have a shoot that I'm doing soon where I need to produce the same white limbo stuff that you had in the beginning. If you wouldn't mind... could you fill us in on how you produced such rich and lovely images in the beginning. I have the background white and greenscreens already and a pretty decent light package and kinos.... but I haven't tackled it yet and you nailed it.. so I'd like to pick ya brain if I could.... Thanks again....

So, what did you use outside the stage sequences, when she changes her clothes or later in that corridor (the yellow tinted shots...)
If that was all available light, I´ll have to rethink my lighting style...
Thanks for you answers!

Great work, man! I would only say that you may want to do more color correction, given that your densities, particularly in the blacks, are all over the place from shot to shot.

Really nice piece.

true. it does look a little more consistent on SD/HD - the QT gamma shift messes with a lot of the subtle black correction.

All available light. For the most part, that works well, but especially in the hallway, it would've been nice to have a bounce board or an on-camera light to hit the face a bit, but I kinda liked it a little mysterious and haunting.

Nice work!!

Workflow question: Did you do a live capture into a laptop or external HD? Or did you use P2 cards?

24p or 24pn?

Did you use FCP 5.04 or 5.1.1?

thanks for any info around this. :)

Hey!

I shot to P2 cards with a P2 store on set. 24PN. FCP 5.1.1.
