DO I need the DeckLink HD Pro PCIe to use the Panasonic BT-LH1700W on Pro Mac

Hi I'v just ordered the Pro Mac Dual 2.66 with the ATI Radeon X1900 dual card. 1Tb of storage and 2Gb of Ram. I was also looking at getting the DeckLink HD PCIe for connecting to the Panasonic BT-LH1700w for colour correction and as my main monitor; and also for outputting to highter end equipment should I need any additional work such as graphics or titling.
Just wondering what you guys out there think ?

You could also use the Matrox MXO which outputs SDI. The question is whether you wish to have the capture functions that a capture card provides. In that case, the Kona or Decklink cards would work better for you.

Thanks Ned, So I could hook up the Matrox MXO to the BT-LH1700W SDI and monitor this way. What about outputting though; I will be shooting with the HVX 720 25p mainly and may be outputting the finished piece for additional graphics and titling. I am not an editor so please excuse my lack of knowledge but I was reading that the Decklink provides 10 bit 4:4:4 output capability; I'm not sure how this works with DVC Pro HD or what the benifits are.

You would hook up the MXO to the second DVI port on your x1900. The MXO would give you DVI output if you wanted to hook up another Apple monitor as well as SDI output and audio output.

Decklink and Kona boards would allow you to uprez to HDCAM or D5. Now, as far as 4:4:4... you just can't create the color space that isn't there. DVCPRO HD is 4:2:2. You're talking HDCAM SR with some hefty hardware and software requirements. But, if an uprez to a higher codec is what you need, you are better off with the board and with the MXO, which is for display and downrez to SD purposes.

Thanks again Ned ! I am still unsure ; as the decklink is aprox the same price as the Matrox and will allow me to do all this and uprez to a higher codec if I need. Like I said I am not an editor so please feel free to let me know differently.

The MXO looks great, but it should be like $400 bucks, $500 tops. It doesn't make sence to me if I can get a Decklink for a couple hundred more.

Just ordered the Decklink HD Pro PCI e. I felt the little extra was worth it for the features included. Will keep you posted on my results. Thanks for the posts !
