I just got my FS100 so please bear with teh noob ?'s

Here was my thinking...
Shoot everything in 60P (cuz thats all you can do right now with the FS100)
Camera set to 720/60P
Import into a 30P timeline
then choose which shots to comform to 30P, and which to leave as 60P (for slowmo)

how is that so far?

but... I have been unable to do so up to this point.

I can import the P2 files from the FS100. They show up in the bin as 60P files, but when I drop them into a 30P timeline they show as needing to be rendered (redlined) and then play back at 30P....

any help?

Yes, you can shoot in 60p with your FS-100 or 24p for that matter or 30p for that matter. You can shoot in any HVX format except native, since native does not stream over firewire.

When you say "need to be renedered" and redline, I presume you are using Final Cut Pro. So, in FCP, do an easy set up for DVCPRO HD 59.94, drop your 60p footage into a 59.94 timeline, and no rendering needed.

If you wish to do variable frame rates with the HVX, then you need Apple's Frame Rate Converter plug-in, the latest version of which is on the FCP 5.1 distribution disk. Drop that into your plug-ins folder. Highlight the clip shot at a variable frame rate and convert.

got it.

tried it.

results are less then I expected. some of the resulting slow mo (60P into 30P) is stuttery. doesnt look as good as shooting 30Pn with a 60P frame rate.

huh...

the experimenting goes on.

thnx for the quick repsonse.

I'll have to try shooting in 30P to the FS100, then doing the frame rate conversion to see if the resulting footage is better.

Definitely try shooting either 30p or 24p and see if you like the results better. Now, another factor here is monitoring and that's the real issue that many folks don't realize when they get into HDV or DVCPRO HD cameras. The computer screen just is not a reliable monitor. Your options range from a capture card with SDI output into an SDI monitor to capture card with SDI->DVI converter into a Cinema display, or capture card -> component to component HD monitor and finally, Matrox MXO which will take DVI from your video card and convert to a broadcast signal which you can monitor via a DVI cinema display, component or SDI.
