after recording on dc rack hd. The clip plays on quick time there is sound but NO picture?

can some one help please.

Are you trying to play back in QuickTime Player on a PC or a Mac? It won't work on a PC because Apple has not released a DVCPro decoder for Windows. On the Mac, I believe the codec comes with the latest update for FCP. Not sure whether it's also included with QT Player Pro.

No, the DVCProHD codec is not currently included in QuickTime for Windows. We're not sure why, but Apple has decided not to release several codecs for QuickTime for Windows, including AIC (Apple Intermediary Codec) and DVCProHD. I'm guessing they do it for either licensing reasons, or to maintain a competitive advantage to an all-Mac workflow, but frankly, in my humble opinion, it stinks. It breaks the whole idea of QuickTime that existed when I worked for Apple, which is that QuickTime files just work, and you don't need to worry about codecs.

Just like Microsoft has alwasys left about half of the Windows Media library out of the Mac version of Windows Media Player. This is the first time Apple has released a Windows QT version that was missing a couple of codecs. Sometimes competition hurts.

What I said was, "FCP use's QTPro's engine". That's a Mac only statement.

As I understand this then, you are unable to monitor or review footage shot in QT after you shoot it while on a PC?

Then, how does this integrate with FCP on a Mac?

Footage is not "shot" in QT, it is "shot" in MXF, and to edit it in FCP, it get's re-wrapped into a QT DVCPRO-HD wrapper, that's all. The QT DVCPRO-HD codec has not yet been added to the Windows version of QT Player.

Ben, I am aware of mxf "shooting" or "acquiring" formats.

Thanks. But what I am concerned about is whether I can preview footage "acquired" by DV Rack HD to determine whether it is what I "acquired" and then at some later point import that into FCP.

That's the issue, not the terminology.

DV Rack may be able to play back the QT DVCPRO-HD file, I don't have it, I don't know. But QT Player in Windows won't play it back. I'm sure DV Rack should be able to play it back. Why not drop Serious Magic an email and ask them?

Thanks Ben.

Then I understand it, DV Rack will play back the mxf file that is acquired, and then I used the DVCProHD Decoder to decode to QT.

Or perhaps just import those MXF files into FCP.

You would have to agree that the workflow is still a little vague.

No, you don't have to do that.

Yes DV Rack will acquire directly in Quicktime format. And yes DV Rack will play the clips back while you're in DV Rack. And yes, FCP can import those files directly.

But you can't play the QT files outside of DV Rack unless you do one of two things: drop the files into EDIUS Broadcast, or into Avid XPress Pro HD. Both of those apps can play back DVCPRO-HD quicktime files, even though quicktime itself can't (on the PC).

Thanks, Barry. You beat me to it.

I think there's some confusion in workflow between using DV Rack and using our DVCProHD Decoder.

DV Rack captures direct to AVI or QuickTime files. There is no MXF file created when you capture direct in DV Rack, unless you are simultaneously recording to a P2 card. All the captured files in DV Rack are AVI or QuickTime.

In DV Rack, QuickTime and AVI files play and scrub normally. You can review your footage immediately inside of DV Rack.

Outside of DV Rack, QuickTime files will not play in the QuickTime Player for Windows, since Apple doesn't include the DVCProHD codec. The QuickTime files will play on the QuickTime Pro Player on a Mac system with Final Cut installed. they will also play back in Avid XPress Pro HD or Canopus Edius, since those applications use their own codec.

If you have installed the DVCProHD Decoder product (which comes bundled free with DV Rack HD,) then most Windows applications will play back the AVI files that DV Rack generates.
