DV Monitor

Hey,

Ben said my non-disclosure agreement has expired so I can talk about my experiences with DV Monitor.

I was fortunate enough to be a beta tester for Ben.
Credit to Ben the program was extremely stable from the get go and most of my involvement in making sure it would work on various systems.
It does work with the HVX200 in SD. I mainly used it with my Sony PD150.
Yeah, that's right. I wasn't smart enough to know what a killer camera the DVX was. I made up for it though and got a HVX200. :)
I'm sure an HD version will be in the works but like Ben said, you have to have a foundation to build upon.

A really nice thing for me is the easy calibration of the monitor.
What's the point of being able to view the video on my laptop if what I see isn't what I get?

Being 44 years old, my eyes aren't what they used to be. Being able to focus 1:1 and not having to look at a little LCD screen are the two biggies for me. Moving from a 3.5" screen to a 17" screen is pretty sweet too. :)

Yeah, I have a Marshall monitor but so far, I haven't got a battery supply for it to take with me in the field. I pretty much always take my laptop with me and it's already bought and paid for. :)

The nicest thing about DV Monitor? It's made for a Mac. Yeah baby! Finally!

It's also why DVXuser is where I hang out. P2 Log, P2 Genie and now DV Monitor all have the creators here on DVXUser. If I have questions I can go to the source right here. I can also talk with all of you about what works and what doesn't.

Sometimes there's so much information that is exchanged here on a daily basis I have a hard time keeping up. Even Jan from Panasonic hangs out here to keep her finger on the pulse of what's happening and what people want.

Anyway, enough babbling, I have a lot of new posts here I have to read. :)

I just wanted to let everyone know that we are hard at work on new products that have things like scopes and other features you are all dying for.

Feel free to ask any questions or suggest new ideas.

Thanks

I just checked out the website and the demo video and my first reaction is "WOW!!" This looks great.

my main question that comes to mind (and forgive me if it was answered previously on other threads):

1. The price seems extremely reasonable, will there be additional charge for upgrades, how often would you see that taking place, and how much?

Looks great though, like n8ture said, its very cool to be able to interact on dvxuser with the makers of the products (aka the horse's mouth!)

I second the nomination for a PC version. I'd buy it this second if it existed.

Good questions. I'll be patiently waiting the answers, also

Hi,

Glad you liked it!

Updates will be free, new major Upgrades will have a fee.

Its hard to say what kind of schedule we will have for upgrades.

We are hard at work on bigger and better products, so as we release those, new features will trickle down to DV Monitor.

I want everyone to know that if you buy into DV Monitor now your investment is safe, we will allow you to step up to our other products for about the cost of the difference in price. That way if you need to grow, we will make it very easy for you to move up to the product that fits your needs.

Also DV Monitor owners will have first crack at being Beta Testers in the future.

Hi Mike,

There are always thoughts.

But is it reasonable to go head to head with a much bigger company that already owns the Windows market?

You could compromise and buy a new Mac Intel laptop and get the best of both worlds. I can say that if you intend to do HD, you will really need a new Mac Book / Pro to get the horse power needed to do this.

Word on the street is the new Apple Laptops are real good deals for the money. And hell, you might just like Mac OS X.

There is something to be said about editing video on a Mac with Final Cut, heck Barry and Jarred have come to see the light of using a Mac for video.

Thanks
Ben

Any thoughts about a version for PCs?

Mike

Sounds great Ben,

Another question that comes to mind is, how did you end up on the serial # issue as far as same version on multiple computers? That was being discussed in the original thread and I'm not sure what the resolution was.

I think Apple is real sh**ty about how much they charge for extra licenses to a small business/personal user.

How about direct to disk recording? any thoughts on that in the future?

Oh yes, but that will be in our higher end app.

If you think of things that you would like, please visit our site and send us an email from the support page.

We have so many good ideas.. its scary!

Thanks
Ben

Just wanted to let everyone know that we have released an update to DV Monitor.

Just wanted to let everyone know that we have launched DV Monitor Pro. Main new features are D2D recording, shot logging with Labels, ratings and notes, Instant FCP export so you can start editing as soon as you are finished shooting, Custom Image Overlay for SFX shots, and Shot and Continuity tools.

Feel free to ask questions about this new version.

Hi bena, I checked out every clip you have on your website. Now the question, is the for the dvx and hvx (in 4:3 mode only)?

Currently in the market for a direct to disk app. for use with m2.

Hi Ncje,

Currently DV Monitor only supports SD, but you can easily use the HVX in SD mode or the DVX or any other DV camera.

We support 16:9 anamorphic squeeze, have not looked to see if the HVX has that mode in SD, but I think it does.

Hope that answers your question.

hey bena. what is the upgrade plan for dv monitor pro? ie, if i purchase 1.0, and a year from now you put out a major overhaul 2.0, say, to add hd features, will that be a discounted price? maybe even free?

by the way, GREAT PRICE!!! plus, my demo experience with dv monitor pro was light years better than with the closest mac competitor i could find. i appreciated that your demo actually works without being disabled after a few days. oh yeah, and that it doesn't have DEMO or some other annoying words written over every single window. based on this alone, regardless of the upgrade policy i'll be picking up dv monitor pro shortly. well done friend.

Hi Slimchrisp,

Thanks for your kind words. We debated long and hard about the best way set up the demo so that it would be functional and allow people to determine if it was right for them.

We have a fair upgrade policy. We take care of our customers. :)

Can I ask what your thoughts are on our GUI versu the other app?

Ben
