If you want to transfer P2 files from the camera, via firewire, to an external firewire drive, you can't do it direct, can you? I mean, I'm assuming the drive has to be hooked to a computer. What I'm thinking about is one of those LaCie portable and allegedly rugged drives (the ones with the orange rubbery frame that are supposed to be tougher than normal). I guess I'd have to take a laptop too, which is an older iBook with only a 30 gig drive, hence the need for an external one. It would be nice if you could just go from camera to drive.

P2 to firewire drive question

The HVX200 can offload P2 to an external SPB2-compatible hard drive using Firewire, provided the drive is formatted using the FAT32 file system. The camera can format the drive for you if needed.
You need to configure the camera for IEEE 1394 HOST mode -- details are on page 84 of the manual.

You can directly offload to a firewire drive. No computer necessary.
It's perfectly safe and completely reliable, especially as the camera supports a "verify" mode to absolutely make sure that the copy happened properly.
There are disclaimers because the formatting of the drive is a destructive procedure, and there are limitations to how many partitions it can create (60gb is about the most it will use). But within those restrictions it works just fine.
