Its was disjectas footage i wonderad if it was HDV or SDI?

All 24F HDV captured via Firewire to Aspect HD/CineForm intermediate codec at 24P, edited in Premiere Pro and (most of them) encoded to WMV HD.

what camera was that that you used on the beachball clip....may be a stupid question

My XL-H1. I used the SD 16x manual lens and recorded both HDV to tape and DVCPRO HD from the raw, uncompressed SDI of the live camera signal. I used a Kona LH card and FCP for DVCPRO HD capture. The DVCPRO HD clip is the shorter 5 sec. one.

Nope. It's the uncompressed live SDI signal (in camera mode, NOT vcr mode) that makes a signifigant quality difference.

What's cool is having the option of both. Obviously HDV acquisition is far more practical for small shoots, but for greenscreen shoots or if you have the budget for an onset editor/capture person, SDI is well worth the effort.

Hey you guys heres some news you will find interesting.

I just today, not 25minutes ago, met with Christopher HEnze and Jeff Gibbs. Christopher is the DP, and Jeff is teh Producer of Farenheight 9/11, bowling for columbine ETC. 200million dollar boxoffice returns, half a billion in DVD sales. these guys are responsible for mking the Weinstein brothers alot of money and are well likes, and get lots of money for their productions.

They were testing 35mm filmouts of all the different HD cams. Guess who won hands down, 100% blew the rest out of the water. XLH1, thats who. They said the HVX200 was so inferior it was a joke. they actually called it FAke HD. which i thought was funny considering i always considered HDV to be fake hd ( im jokin im joking.... jeez.) But it was interesting because iwas telling hem about you clip elton, the white water rafting clip. an how the HDV of the Xlh1 stood up to the torture test. they said white water rafting isnt a torture test. what they said was a torture test was and im paraphrasing here, " Imagine a Brightly colored backgorund, with lots of speckles of color, and youre panning slowly to the left, and a person wearing a solid colred shirt walks in frame toward the right. They said the codec falls apart entirely. it sgets all macro blocky. But he also said in that rare situation, you jut have to try not to move the camera.

These guys were VERY smart dudes. and to be honest, While the HVX is the right camera for Me, because of DVCpro50 VAriable frame rates ETC. I as a DP and DVX lover hereby admit, that i will shoot XLH1 if i ever shoot anyhting that goes to film out. Thats it ..... ive said it. And i say this because, these guys who have millions of dolalrs riding on their work, and have VASTLY more experisnce that i do, and have had the tests performed, full on Filmouts. They say its the way to go.

Wahoo.

Great plost or must I say...post? (Not plot!) Well, aside the spelling problems specially to non-native english people that will need to guess which are the letters far away from there. I must salute you for your excellent input.

well lately ive been shying away from being camera biased. Theres no point. if client wants it shot on a z1... im shooting a Z1. if they want HVX200, ( OLe!) i will shoot hvx200. I stopped caring the day i realised, the difference in the picture is in the quality of your lighting. Good lighting: 1chip Sony TRV70 will look VERY VERY good. for example, this is from said camera.

If someone posted that i doubt anyone would have noticed.

Your profile says 23??? How in the heck are you gaining an audience with the likes of these fellows???! I'm jealous, you must be doing something right, or be extremely lucky!

Did they say how the XL-H1 filmout compared to 2/3" HD like the F900? Did they test SDI acquisition from the XL-H1 like Scott Billups did or just HDV?

Also, how did they overall rank the 1/3" HD cams for filmouts?

They liked the F900 better obvously. More of everyhting. res, Dynamic range, colorspace ETC. The said, for what its worth, the Xl1h was more than enough for doc work.

They did the trandsfers from HDV. They are Doc filmers, they cant be bothered with SDI capture.

They basically said the JVC was no good, the z1 was useless, the HVX was too soft ( although they did admit that HVX had great color and Latitde in the transfers) andthe XlH1 was sharpest. They seemed to care most about sharpness. cause unlike us, they ar actually going to national release on 35mm. so they need uber-crisp 1080P. They seemed most interested in a 1/2 inch Sony XD cam and wanted to use the Xlh1 as back up.

Thanks for the report. I've heard a recent report from a filmmaker shooting his latest doc on the XL-H1 saying that his 35mm out was stunning. It was performed at EFilm in Hollywood. I plan to see it when I visit L.A. soon.

His previous doc, shot on the DVX, is beautiful.

Im glad to hear a 35mm transfer holds up from these chips. Certainly seems they checked out what suits their needs. That said: different strokes for different folks and from what I gather at this stage of the HD market.... whatever you choose go make something great! Canon HURRY UP with the A1 G1 already!

i just hate the feeel of the servo lens. i want a nice manual lens.

I bet you'd really dig the 16x manual lens on an H1...except when going handheld and zooming a fair amount.

It'll be interesting to see how the lens on the A1/G1 actually feels. I like the fact that they've added the focus ring speed control, which should be a big help. The most important thing is that the quality of the glass remains at least as good as the H1's because it's a big factor for the sharpness of the Canon imagery in general.

Ok initial reports on the glass are good... keep in mind this is second hand info. But the guy has no reason to bs me.

i like the 16x manual. its an SD lens that holds up quite nicely on the HD right?

edit: What ma i talkign about the camera would never be off of a 35 adapter anyway.... it really doesnt matter.... lol

Yes, it's quite surprising. It's just a good piece of glass with full professional control.

If you're doing a doc or anything where sharpness and a realisitc look really matters you might reconsider that notion.

oh i dont shoot docs persay. i do more Commercials Music Vids, Shorts. ets. but if i were to do a doc, of course. yea .....
