New Updated Red.com .. new body, new 18-85 zoom, rails.

I can't think straight... too... much.. to.. take... in... :)
I like the new direction... Friggin awesome. Love the new site.

Great update! With REDCINE the workflow in post is becoming clear. But I'm missing details about the 18-85mm zoom. That's what I was most eagerly waiting for. And a question about the "flex mounted High Resolution LCD": will I be able to mount it on different points of the body & cage, as shown on some of the images?
By the way: provided with 4k+ resolution, when are we going to see IMAX footage shot with a RED?

I'm slightly worried by the fact that the FAQ still isn't officially acknowledging photo lens mounts. This is a pretty essential feature for those of us intending to use RED on a tight budget.

I wouldnt worry about it. Its very clearly a removable mount.. which should give you enough confidence that adapters are coming. If Red doesnt do it, Ill hire Jimmy the machinest from Clairmont to make them for us :) heh heh heh.

I can do it too. Just let me know what you want and I can get mass production running in a few weeks.

Well my take on the pictures is that the "flex mounted LCD" is actually the entire left hand side of the camera body when closed (the large panel with 8 screws?) which can then be opened, detached with cable run to mount on the various hard points of the camera or cage. I take it that would give you the large, high res LCD that is supposed to be standard part of the camera itself.

The EVF would seem to be the high mounted left hand side attachment.

That bright display on the back would seem to be settings display (hopefully with adjustable colour/brightness hue)?

No doubt I will shortly be proven right or wrong but those are my guestimates!

As for workflow etc, I have to agree that RedCine looks like the ultimate software agnostic workflow!! Would be awesome to be able to shoot at 4K, store offline while generating an SD/720p (for square pixels) proxy workflow, then pull in the final EDL shots into your favourite editor etc for final rendering etc.

Your hint about RedDrive maybe NOT being hard drive (spinning) based has me very excited, and would explain the high price for such a low capacity device (relative to 2.5" HDDs).

What I draw most from these early reports is - prepare to buy LOTS of HDDs for your archiving needs!! Storage farms will be a growth industry, that's for sure! Will need to advise clients early about them storing the footage on HDDs themselves, or build it into the rental/contract price etc...

Looking forward to the next 24 hours with interest as people start posting footage of IBC, maybe the real footage from the camera and other info!

The rail system takes me back to the Medium and Large format camera days.. Almost every single aspect of those cameras was modular, from the lens boards to the baffles to the ground glass. This is going to be good.

Hey, Jim, could you at least make CAD drawings of the final body design available a little bit before shipment so I can get working on making some useful accessories like a bridge plate with rods, transmitter plates and a handle?

Do you want CAD drawings of these, or what we will be shipping? If is the latter, you'll probably have to wait. Things have already changed from these images... we told you things would change, count on it.

Jim

The much later version

JJ,

I meant CADs of the shipping version. I think we all realize things may be very different in a few months.

Congrats on the projection. Hopefully we can see it in NYC in the near future...
