"Sparrow" on DVD - OFFICIAL THREAD - <DVD AVAILABLE>

Doing a little reading up on Encore, and it looks like if I want transitions I have to upgrade to 2.0. I may see about getting Architect instead, since you like it a lot, and have had good success! :)

Thanks for the props Norm! It was great working with you and Ryan and everyone else on set! Thanks for letting me Beta test the ribs too...someone had to make sure the recipe was safe for all the other DVXusers to make and consume!

I was able to do transitions in 1.0. It's a bit of a workaround, but if you do it right, it looks fine.

Yeah, there's always a work around. What I could have done, and is probably the more legit way to do it, is to have the link to special features and/or scene selections actually be to a fully self contained video that would play as the transition, then have the end action direct to the page I wanted in the end ... however, I didn't have time to test this out, and my thought was that there may be a SLIGHT delay from the end point of one video to the final destination (i.e Special features). Even though the BG of special features or scene selections would be the same as the final frame of the video, I didn't want to have a black gap where there was a pause, etc.

So my work around was to have the video as the actual background, with about a minute or so of FREEZE FRAME. Then I set the loop point of the menu at the point where the freeze frame enters the video clip ... so it would be as perfectly seamless as possible. So when you're looking at the backgrounds of those pages, you're actually watching video, just a video with a freeze frame. Then when you go to the next page, that's just a JPEG still for the BG.

Problem was that when someone hit previous page, they would start at the beginning of that video clip again (before the loop point), so they'd keep seeing the transition. To avoid this, the previous button actually directs to a third page, which is a perfect mirror image of the first/initial page in that menu.

That was my work around, as convoluted as it may sound.

Yeah, so even if I DID want to entertain the idea of DVDSP, it would require a completely different system & platform. I think I'll save my $4K+ and stick with the PC, thanks.

Okay, so back onto topic ...

Who else so far has gotten their DVD's, and would love to hear more feedback.

I'm getting ready to do another huge blitz on MySpace and via e-mail, so if anyone has any quotes they'd like included in them (i.e. from a review/comments on the film/DVD), I'd LOVE to hear 'em.

Overall, two thumbs up ...the visuals are great

Great job on the Special Features... top notch all around

Top notch stuff!

Here are some quotes, if you'd like to use them :)

"The ribs are really good.....so is the film"

Okay so that one's not really very exciting, but am I really allowed to have a quote, seeing as I worked on it? if so, then here it is:

"The best behind the scenes documentaries EVER"
-Patrick LaValley

"I can't wait to get the DVD in the mail!"
and
"I ordered the DVD and I don't even know Norm"
or
"I haven't seen the movie yet, or the DVD features, but I definitely will!"

(feel free to add extra "!" for more effect)

Oh wow guys, that's too much. And John, excellent idea on the exclamation mark, thanks! LOL

Actually, Patrick, that might actually be funny to list your own quote for the BTS. I just may do it. :)

Oh, and John ... just printed your shipping label today, and your DVD will go out with tomorrow's shipment(s). Thanks again.

Oh, and Brandon, another cool feature about DVDA ....

If your total project is too large for the 4.7GB DVD, you can simply press the FIT TO DISC option, and DVDA will compress anything that can be down to the appropriate size & authors the DVD.

For SPARROW, I actually had about 5.4GB in total content. I made sure the film was left as is by rendering it out to MPEG2 w/compliant 5.1 ac3 file, and then put all the other content on as JPEG/PNG images and or AVI files. It compressed everything down, while still retaining over a 6.1 bit rate on all of the content. I was then also able to author the fully 24P Widescreen DVD.

Wow, that's really nice man! I will for sure look into that. I am thinking of getting a dual layer burner too... so much darn data to fit onto discs nowadays.

Yep, you've just got to keep in mind your ROI, since there's more cost involved, longer burn/duplication times, etc.

Im waiting for Brandon to post his on ebay later tonight!

just kidding! :) got a sample of a movie of the menus? Ive done some pretty cool looking crap with DVDSP menus here at work for retail DVD's
