SD Image Quality: Canon XL2 Vs Canon XLH1

Hi everyone,

I am a professional videographer and work with 2 Canon XL2 for shooting all sorts of events: Weddings, concerts, congresses, institutional DVD for companies, etc... I live in Europe and my system is PAL.

I am thinking of doing a major upgrade to HDV. That means not only the upgrade of my NLE system (new workstation, new capture card...), as also an upgrade of my Canon XL2 camcorders to a pair of Canon XLH1 ones.

Amongst many new great features XLH1 provides, it will be a lot easier to do multicamera shooting, not to mention being able to offer HDV choice to my clients... Although the market is 80-90% still not ready for that, specially amongst the average consumers. On the other hand, the same fact that most people still don't have HDV ready TVs, etc... makes me wonder if this is the right time for such investments.

I wouldn't hesitate in upgrading my NLE system right now, as it will considerably improve my workflow even if I keep shooting DV... However, when it comes to upgrading XL2 to XLH1, thats a different story. By the time the market will be demanding me to deliever my product in HDV, Canon will have probably come out with XLH2, so I feel tempted to wait for a XL2 to XLH2 upgrade instead of rushing to do a XL2 to XLH1 upgrade.

Another reason for that, and probably the most important is my uncertainty about the image quality of Canon XLH1 when shooting in SD/DV.
As long as the market doesn't want HDV from me, I will still have to deliever my product in SD/DV, and I'm afraid of wasting $10000 in an upgrade (considering I sell both my XL2) to end up with lower quality SD/DV footage.

Bottom Line: I'd like to make sure that the Canon XLH1 not only shoots in HDV, but that it also has an SD/DV image quality at least as good as the XL2.

Can anyone here compare the SD/DV image quality of the XL2 Vs XLH1, both in interlaced and progressive modes? Does the 24f means any difference in quality between the progressive mode of the XL2 and the XLH1 (in SD/DV, of course).

I don't have the time to post anything but suffice it to say that the XL-H1 is a superior camera in SD too. It shoots great DV in 60i or 24p (yes, progressive) It's overall tweakability is improved over the XL2 (which is a wonderful SD cam) and it's extremely sharp...which can always be dialed down to taste.

Warning: Once you shoot HDV 60i or 24F it'll be tough to settle for DV...even for SD. It just has more image info that downconverts EXTREMELY well to the SD frame.

24F has been thoroughly scrutinized to date and nobody can really tell the difference between "true 24p" and 24F. In reality, the XL-H1 shoots true 24p in DV mode, and 24F is a very slick virtual 24p in HD that looks unbelievably good. (25F for PAL users)

If you don't need interchangeable lenses all that badly I would consider waiting for the XH-G1 and get 2 cameras and save some dough for other needs.

Get out of here! Are you serious? The H1 shoots true progressive in SD and 24F in HD?! That is so bizzare. If it's the "same" why don't they use only true progressive?

I just downloaded the H1 manual and what I read there is that in SD the camera has 2 different 24F options: 2:3 pulldown (for TV viewing) and 2:3:3:2 pulldown (for film transfer). None the less, everything I've seen that was shot with 24F looks darn good. I can't wait to get my XH A1!

They can call it 24p in DV mode because a single field of the HD interlace sensor is sufficient for SD 24p. I'm pretty sure they simply slice out an SD frame from a single HD field.

Looks great too.
