i shot some footage with my HVX200 in 720p24 and have imported the footage into final cut pro 5.1.1 on my 17"macbookpro. I am trying to lay this off to DVCPRO HD tape with a AJ-HD1200A deck. I have device control with the deck. I can lay black to tape and even record. But i have no preview in the capture display or edit to tape display. so i cant even see if i actually dumped the footage to tape. I get nothing on the audio meters of the deck. I have A/V settings set to DVCPRO HD 720p24. I cant figure it out. Please help.

I believe that the settings to the Deck have to be based on 60 fps.. or that 59.98 setting. I had a lot of trouble the one time I got the deck... but I believe that might be your issue. The tape uses that pull down and all that business.... especially if you shot it at 24p.... Also, it's not advisable to drop both slow-mo and normal speed on the same tape.. but that might not be relevant if you shot it on the HVX... I know it was that way with the Varicam.

I had to do this same thing when I dropped HD back to the HVX... Has to be set to 59.98 and not in native mode...

Not sure if this helps but I would give it a shot..... You should also be able to hook up a monitor to the deck to check it out that way, I suppose....

Try,
VIEW>Refresh A/V devices
Then look at,
VIDEO PLAYBACK
You should see the deck.
Like Justyn said, hook up a monitor
to the deck to make sure you are getting an output

Use the Easy Setup for DVCPro HD 720p24 to help align everything nicely to start with. The firewire connection will add the pulldown for you during the record process.

I think its menu option 600 you want set to 0002.

Using either the deck or FCP stripe the first few seconds of necessary timecode onto the tape. Then rewind the tape just a bit. Then you can do your edit to tape and assemble edit.

Don't trust the assemble edit 'window' as to whether or not you're getting video. I've seen it show up black in FCP and still get my output to be fine. Like the others said you'll want to monitor video and audio from the deck to an external monitor to verify what is being recorded to the tape.

Oh and just an FYI, no probs on this end doing both normal frame rate and variable frame rate on the same tape. Had that happen on the masters (DP just shot it that way) and have laid that kind of mix back to tape too. Never had a single hiccup there.
