P2 Viewer & Audio

Hello,

I've worked in film/video production for years and years. Done a lot of work with Beta SP, and practically everything else. On set, it's always been nice to be able to review takes with cast and crew for performance, lighting, audio, etc.

I'm about to invest in a whole new HVX setup, but the new workflow has me a little confused in regards to reviewing takes on set. I've used the search function, but no one has covered this that I can tell.

1) If I download the P2 cards to the PC via the PCMCIA slot, will P2 Viewer allow me to review the take "full screen" with audio? One of the benefits of tape is that I can set up a small review station "on set" with calibrated CRT monitor, audio mixer, and reference monitor speakers so I can SEE and HEAR exactly what I am getting after a take. "How do I do this in the P2 world?"

2) I've been looking briefely at the Panasonic BT-LH1700W Monitor. Can I go directly from laptop to monitor and use this monitor as a review monitor for takes with P2 Viewer? Will P2 Viewer allow me to see 1080p at full screen on this monitor ALONG with audio in sync from my laptop to reference audio monitors?

3) Can you even hook the Panasonic BT-LH1700W monitor directly to a laptop? I'm assuming I need some sort of adaptor to make the transition. What are your recommendations for this?

and finally...

4) If my setup isn't the best, can you offer alternatives for "on set" monitoring "after a take?" Maybe there's a monitor/audio/P2 alternative that works perfectly and I just haven't considered it.

Thanks so much in advance.

John

1.) Depending on your PC, you should be able to see and hear everything.
On the MAC I can see full screen PB using a G-raid Firewire 800 drive,
I don't know if a PC laptop can use Firewire 800.

2.) Don't think so, you cannot get the video signal out from a laptop back to the Panasonic monitor. You would need a PC or MAC with video cards to do that.
In this case you would review from the HVX using the component cable BEFORE dumping the footage to the computer.

3.)Again, going from a PC laptop is not going to be easy, I know on the MAC I have a DVI out and could get a Matrox MXO to go back to the monitor but I can get full-screen PB on my 17" powerbook anyway,,,,not as nice as the Pana monitor but good enough for checking....
