Sony Vs. Red? Sony's early response to Red?

Yes.. of course, the problem is the Sony Monitor and Sony Camera divisions are seperared, except the Cinealta badge on the SXRD groups them together.

Red will most likely help sell 4k projectors regardless though.. if they are friends or foes it wont matter much... so Im not sure why Sony is taking this somewhat public road....

It makes perfect sense. This is a competitive, not always ethical, corporate environment. I saw the rumblings beginning at Cinegear in Los Angeles, and this is just the beginning. Expect more. Much more. A camera like this, if fully realized, turns this industry inside out and the those currently in the driver's seat are not going to let that happen quietly or without a fight. I understand it. The only point of contention I have is that the status quo is driven more by the bottom line than the best interests of artists and filmmakers. That's the nature of most business with a few exceptions. Red is one of those exceptions.

The best news about this is Jim Jannard. You couldn't have a better man at the helm to avoid engaging in this type of game, and seeing the project through despite all obstacles. Really, it's exciting. Red's footage will be seen. People will respond. The news will get out. Ultimately, this tactic won't even help Sony.

The answer to this move and all future actions by competitors is to confront them when necessary, but by all means continue to flourish and prosper in the creation of the Red camera and future Red products. That's what will win the day.

I can't wait to get my Red Camera.

If ya think about it this is awesome publicity. You'll find another projector in time and you can present it by saying:

"This is the footage that scared Sony so badly they wouldn't let us screen on their projector for fear of putting their camera division right out of business. Enjoy." :)

If RED ends up having to project at 2K for the show, in addition to scaled to 2k images, they should also crop some 4k material into a 2k window -- which would allow people to see the full quality of the 4k material.

Its more fun to speculate:

Spec One: (Someone at IBC actually has some gonads!)

IBC basically told Sony that if it was going to offer use of its 4K to the D-Cinema then it has to be no strings or else it will be removed from IBC's theatre.

Spec Two: (Sony Marketing Exec. wakes up from nap)

Sony realizes that making this move against Red would be tantimount to putting their stamp of acknowledgement that Red is the future.

Spec Three: (Bad Japanese to English translation)

The original memo from Sony was actually: "Will they be allowing sushi in the theatre?"

Ah... Revolutions, and the nests they stir up.

We can't expect to start a revolution like this and not think that we will rustle some feathers. When man gets scared, they do stupid things. Just watch the latest horror flick... does "Movie Stupid" happen? yes, and that is all Sony is doing... They are going out to check the garage to see what made that sound... with only a butter knife...

The time is at hand brothers and sisters! And some huge corporation with their 4k projector, will --- NOT --- stand in the way.

I will leave you with one last picture, let it be an inspiration for revolution:

Is the Sony projector all that good though? I heard the competing 2K projectors put out a better image (i.e. the National Alliance of Theatre Owners has a report that prefer other projectors).

I got to see it last year at Showest in a private room and yeah it is perty amazing. They had this thing where they have you go up to the screen and see if you can see the pixals AKA screen door effect. And you could see a dang thing. The projector is awesome. But do I think it is the best. I think for the price point it should come with its own movie theater. j/k. But right now there is just not the demand for it. The demand will come and you will see more and more movie theaters be switch over to digital. You have to rember that Christie has a hudge foot in the door of the movie theater industry. So they are pushing their 2K hard.

It's a good thing this was cleared up, because I was working on beautiful plan...

Assuming Sony wouldn't allow RED to be shown on their projector...

1) Jim announces that he wasn't excited about showing RED footage on an inferior projector anyway and he's planning on introducing his own 4K projector at 1/10th the cost.

2) Sony executives are so perplexed by this statement that in a state of confusion, they dare RED to show footage on their projector.

3) Jim accepts the challenge and shows RED footage split screened with Cinealta or pirated rumored camera footage. Everybody laughs at Sony.
Touche!

No, I am not on drugs

It does rock- -I've seen HDV(I know I know) material shot at 25p projected on a Sony 4K and it looked surprisingly tasty. A native 4K signal should be breathtaking.

Have you seen a 2K projector ? What's it like in comparison ?

I'd love to have a Barco 2K to preview RED's 2K (scaled) footage on. Yet, I don't think that they will come down in price enough by the time RED arrives --- unless more companies jump on the 2K, 4K projector bandwagon.
