Sony Vs. Red? Sony's early response to Red?

Sad but it may be true.. An internal Sony memo went out this morning to Sony Broadcast divisions from Japan that Red footage is not to be put on the sony 4k projector's servers at IBC.

Do you know that for a fact or are you speculating? If you know, how do you know? If you're speculating, making statements like that isn't useful.

Pretty stupid of Sony. It's decisions like that which send even more people to the Red camp. I'm sure a lot more Redservations will be placed because of this.

Nothing is "leaked" from the RED office without permission. This is not a very useful way to convey information, IMO. It's inflammatory.

True, we need more facts but if it is true it is very useful for potentially creating a public outcry that Sony may or may not be influenced by.

A public outcry from whom? People with RED reservations? That's not the way to influence Sony.

I'm not buying this story yet. It's far too self-serving and the timing is odd.

billg - funny you mention that, I was going to say something about it as I was catching up on this thread. I don't know for a fact whether it was somebody at Sony (what I think likely) or somebody at SXSW not wanting to pee on their guest (SXSW's side, although certainly not phrased that way). In any case, I had something lined up, and it went away once the Sony 4K projector got involved. It suuuuuuuure sounded to me like Sony (or at least their presence, in the most generous interpretation of the facts) caused the screening to get knifed. I was livid - I'd been lining that up with SXSW since the previous year. So if it were Sony that knifed my screening (and I still don't know, and don't know who/what to trust), they play HARD. And mean.

In any case, as to this situation, puredv - again, confirm as speculation of fact - that's way too big a corpse to drop on the dinner table without a little context here.

And if true, that's Sony playing neither fair nor cool - aren't other camera vendors showing their stuff? Why single out Red?

If Sony did actually get their way, which they won't, it would only create massive buzz for the RED camera. Sony is so screwed! Should have been a little more forthcoming with 24P... A holes.
By the way... will I be able to say RED was more or less made in the U.S.A?

With all the viral marketing that has been going on you think only people with RED reservations are interesting in seeing the footage? I believe a lot more people then reservationists are curious at this point.

I find the timing interesting as well but I am not ready to speculate at this point.

If this is actually true, I wonder who at Sony decided that they should become be part of the Red Marketing effort?

I agree that the interest extends beyond those with reservations. But as for a meaningful "outcry"? I don't think so.

This plays a little too well into the viral marketing modus operandi. It's either suspicious and clumsy, or true. But in any event I don't like the way the info has been leaked and allowed to fuel the "us against them" predisposition of many. It just seems ... tacky.

looking at the IBC digital cinema events sony is sponsoring the HD showcase using their 4k projector ..

i don't see any other event listed that says it will use the sony 4k nor do i see sony is sponsoring any of the other D cinema events ... so it just might be the only use of the 4k will be sony's event??

so what is arri & autodesk using to project their events ?
i assume Doremi & Christie will use their own projectors for their events ..

Didn't Jim's original announcement suggest that RED would have its own 4K Sony projector at IBC? What happened to that plan?

This is a horribly stupid question, but what if the 4K footage was transferred to film? I know there isn't enough time to do it now, but I'm sure a lot of people will be curious to see a film transfer eventually. I've never seen 4K footage digitally projected although I hear it's pretty damn sweet.

What other 4k videos are they showing at IBC? Is it just this or not? Could it have been Sony doesn't want IBC to use their projector at all?

Ok so here is what we are going to do. We are going to gather a crack pot team on here. Jarred has to come (we need the hight) Horse can play the drunk distraction, Mr. Blonde will try not to kill everyone at the end, and Briceman (He just looks like the kind of person that would be on a mission like this) He can also bring Jack Daniels Stanly with him. And we are going over there and jacking the 4k out of the IBC convention screening room. We will then relocate in an abandon warehouse on the out scerts of the RED light distric. Then we will spread the word about the screening by telling people to go to the red light distric after the show closes.(Not that that will be hard) and look for someone wareing a patch of the red logo on their arm, or tattooed on the back of there neck or something. Then we will have one hell of a screening. Then when no one shows up to Sony's booth in the morning and they hear about the amazing screening they will be so pissed. We will even have a graphic that says sponncered by Sony so they can't get to mad, we gave them credit for the projector.

What else can shoot 4K? like Genesis? Thompson viper? I mean if they have a 4k projector, sony did not invent it to show red footage..... Obviously.

thats a good idea Damon.. its a good backup :)
Yes it's a good idea, but it should be a last resort. If we do that, it will carry on all the defects of film, all the grain, scratches (etc.). Using the JVC projector is a good idea though too, but I don't think that can be negotiated in that short time :/.
