Paramount and Cruise Part Ways

Who's educated about the movies? I think we, the people on these boards, are a very small part of the equation. We watch films, we discuss them intelligently, but we make up a tiny part of the box office. When you have White Chicks doing better than a good indie, that should tell you something about the movie watching public. Given the choice between polished crap and a challenging film, what do you think they'll choose?

i agree isaac. But what bothers me are the opinions on here that are similar to the general movie watching public.

Why does that bother you? Isn't everyone entitled to his/her own opinion? Shoudl people have a certain opinion because they are here? I don't get that.

That's just the way it is. We all have different tastes. I like good films, but sometimes I like really bad films. :)

HAHA Yep... agreed there... One of my favorite movies ever is Once Upon a Time in Mexico... not a GREAT movie by any standards, but I thoroughly enjoy it.

has anyone tried to read up on scientology? They say their not a religon. but I remember cruise saying they were. Can anyone clarify? I do know scientology was made by some crappy science fiction writer.

Do yourself a favor and buy one of L. Ron Hubbard's scientology books. You'll never laugh so hard in your life. It's freaking amazing that anyone takes it seriously.

Yea.

It's pretty involved. It literally revolves around a belief that we're actually the spirits of aliens in capsules (our bodies) and that we have all this negative energy measured in "thetans". And the goal of scientology is to purge or purify the spirit.

There are a few good articles online that explain it in much better detail than i can recall right now. Rolling Stone had an excellent one. I'll see if i can find the link.

Update: Here's that Rolling Stone article. I recommend reading it.

Just read about half of it. Apparently Tom Cruise is able to movie things with his MIND. WOW. they should of put Tom in star wars so they didn't need special effects to use the force.

EDIT: It actually all sounds like a movie set in the future where there is a new major religon. It also reads alot like a science fiction novel. Perhaps L. Ron Hubbard mixed up his scientology book with a novel before he died. and they've been reading the wrong book?

Scientology wherein you may find the roots of the jedi religion.

How hysterical would that be?

hah, you know what. This sounds alot like the book SURVIVOR by chuck palahnuik (spelling?). Some of this stuff is really crazy though. The people in the interviews sound exactly like Tom Cruise when he gets angry.

Still reading... This caught my eye. You have to pay for the scientology emotional cleansing process known as auditing.

So far, Natalie has gotten much of her auditing for free, through her parents, who have both worked for the church. But many Scientologists pay dearly for the service. Unique among religious faiths, Scientology charges for virtually all of its religious services. Auditing is purchased in 12.5-hour blocks, known as "intensives." Each intensive can cost anywhere from $750 for introductory sessions to between $8,000 and $9,000 for advanced sessions. When asked about money, church officials can become defensive. "Do you want to know the real answer? If we could offer everything for free, we would do it," says Rinder. Another official offers, "We don't have 2,000 years of acquired wealth to fall back on." But Scientology isn't alone, church leaders insist. Mormons, for example, expect members to tithe a tenth of their earnings.

$750 for a session? Yeesh. What a lucrative scam... No wonder they own so much real estate.

EDIT:

Oh it gets better.

Both of Natalie's parents are Clear, she says. Her grandmother is what's called an "Operating Thetan," or "OT." So is Tom Cruise, who is near the top of Scientology's Bridge, at a level known as OT VII. OTs are Scientology's elite -- enlightened beings who are said to have total "control" over themselves and their environment. OTs can allegedly move inanimate objects with their minds, leave their bodies at will and telepathically communicate with, and control the behavior of, both animals and human beings. At the highest levels, they are allegedly liberated from the physical universe, to the point where they can psychically control what Scientologists call MEST: Matter, Energy, Space and Time.

I think Cruise needs to work a little harder on controlling Matt Lauer.

(actually, they can only make me want to see a movie less).

I agree 100% with this. The star is the last reason I want to see a flick. I just want to see a good flick. I'm more apt to see a flick for who the director is.

I have said this before; I am mystified at the general perception of Tom Cruise (especially by people here that want to be a part (Or are a part) of that industry. So the guy jumped on a couch on Oprah ? Whoa! What an asshole! What was he thinking proclaiming true love ? So he told Matt Lauer that he was glib ? Mat Lauer is a punk ass anyway. So he has an opinion on Brooke Shields? Brooke Shields ruined Agassis career in my eyes. So he practices Scientology ? So what, Richard Gere is a buddist. Big ****ing deal.

The media has created and feasted off of these antics (non stories) and blown them up to paint some bizarre picture and you guys fall for this nonsense ?

but that sounded sarcastic to me, I hated every single movie you described,

It wasnt sarcasm. What kind of films do you like anyways ?

Really, if you ask me, Tom Cruise is a lowsy actor. Bad, not average

You would never be the guy in charge of casting in my picture. This guy has been the Oscar Talisman (Winner's and nominees) for Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman and Cuba Gooding, Jack Nicholson, Cameron Crowe, Holly Hunter, Oliver Stone and Barry Levinson.

Dude has been nominated two times himself. Lousy actor ? Bad actor ? You have no judge in talent. That is no flame an no offense intended but come on man.

As far as Scientologists go ? So what. There are more atheists than there are scientologists. At least they beleive in something.

Travolta, Archer, Ribisi ... all Scinetologist. why arent you guys on their case ? Oh, they didnt jump on a couch.

Amen.

As for Mr. Cruise... I think he's a great actor, but I think the man made a big miscalculation and it hurt him bad. I think he was starting to believe the myth of his own invincibility. So he throws open the curtains and shows the world a little bit of himself. And he got pounced on and ripped into as a result.

Its getting real dangerous and vicious for celebrities. I think the biggest problem now is that its so damn easy to become a celebrity. There are buckets full of no-talent ass-clowns who are sold to us as famous.

If fame is easy, and celebrities are a dime a dozen, why should the press or anyone else have respect for any of them?

The spanish killed to change the natives beleifs, do you hate them as well? Do you think about that every single time you see a movie starring a spanish actor? Sounds off the wall, but its a very similar situation. Someones beliefs and public acts do not change my mind and distract me from a movie im viewing. How could it? I am in fact in control of my own mind.

Its so crazy to be a scientologist? Look at other religions. One says im going to come back as a bumble bee, another says i get 46 virgins if i blow myself up to further its cause, another says a guy walked on EFFIN WATER with his homeboy splitting a sea in 2 so some people who have been wandering in a 120 degree desert for 40 days can get to where ever the hell they are going.

Organized religion is good for society, it is needed to keep people in check, but cmon now...dont ostrosize one religion if you arent going to be distracted by others beliefs.

I think the question you should ask is, how come some many scientologists are famous? and how can I be famous too?

Probably because I haven't seen them try to publicly change peoples beliefs.

Huh ? How's that ?

Have some talent for starters. Cruise was popular long before he was involved with Scientology.
