Paramount and Cruise Part Ways

Their loss...

Cruise may very well be a wakadoo off-screen, but he makes for a dynamic (and, more importantly, a BANKABLE) leading man. I cannot say enough about MI3...one of the best action flicks in recent memory (and so far one of my absolute favs of the year...with Pirates & Monster House)

Cruise is a stud as an actor goes.

The only thing I can see that they did togther was The Last Samurai and WB is listed as a Distributor. What a bizarre article.

Definatley their loss.

Oh well... I am not a fan of the NEW cruise... I didn't like MI3 at all... one of the saddest disappointments this year for me.

I never could stand him. No loss as far as I can see.

I guess he'll have more time to pack for the spaceship now though...:Drogar-BigGrin(DBG)

What is this new Cruise ? The one the Media has created as a loon ?

Nope... don't care about the scientology weirdness... it's his persona... I liked Collateral, but in the last three years, that's about all I've liked him in...

Hate is such a strong word, you seem more of a fan than an actual critic and you base your opinions on completly off the wall crap.

I personally dont like Tim Robbins and his agendas and the way he presents them to the public, but he can sure as hell act. Cruise being a scientoligist and acting out in front of the public eye has nothing to do with his liking him on screen. There is no new cruise and old cruise on the screen, its just all the same greatness.

The major studios are slowly dying, and they reject someone like Tom Cruise?

Actually, his public persona is distracting from my enjoyment of him onscreen. Old cruise was a good actor, and he did good films. New cruise is still a good actor, but he acts like jackass offscreen. It's like saying that Mel Gibsons recent screwup won't affect people's enjoyment of him. It will, because even if he's great in a film in the back of your head you're still thinking about that stuff.

Russell Crowe is a great actor but his public persona as a whackjob has damaged his box office performance. People have trouble separating the two because a number of actors share the same persona on and off screen. Cruise is cocky and self assured on screen, and for years he's worn the cocky and self assured mask off screen. Will Smith is the same way, and Tom Hanks is an all around nice guy offscreen and that plus his tremendous talent translates into big box office in his films.

WOTW did pretty well, but I think it could've done better if Cruise had acted like a professional when marketing it.

i loved minority report and collateral, and i liked the last samurai but mostly the writing direction and ken watanabe made that great.

"Stars" are one of the reasons why studios are dying. They need to quit wasting $20 million of the budget on one person and go back to making movies that have a total budget in the $15-20 million range. Movies have become far too big for their own good, in my opinion. A star has zero impact on my decision to go see a movie (actually, they can only make me want to see a movie less).

Gotta disagree, bro...

Cruise's nutty off-screen antics don't affect my movie-going experience one little bit. Neither will any drunken ramblings of Mel Gibson.

Like I've said before, the only time that off-screen antics have carried over in my mind to the big screen itself have been extreme examples; like those of "Hanoi Jane". Making an ass of one's self on Oprah is one thing...treason against one's own country is quite another.

Are you kidding me?

They have been on FIRE...The top movie studios try to reduce their risk by being nearly sole investors in only a handful of pics a year, they pick up and distribute the rest, add to that their ancillary sales, foreign markets, investors AND with the advent of being able to use satellite to beam a movie down to the theater will only enhance their overall distribution power and financial growth. They are FAR from dying....Universal, 20th Century, Pixar, Disney, etc. etc. No way are they dying.

As for Cruise...I agree with Hudson on this...the media is making a mockery out of him. It seems to me that for the longest time, Cruise had THE best PR people in the business....He was doing Top Gun, Days of Thunder, Vampire flicks, Rain Man, Jerry Maguire, etc and we felt like we hardly knew this superstar other than the fact that he was with Nicole Kidman and adopted children. He was rarely in the media except for the occasional interview which kept us curious and wanting more.

Well, about the time he fired his PR people, for some reason, and hired his sister he has been everywhere and has been portrayed as a loon. From Brooke Shields comments, to hopping on the couch to "hiding his baby Suri". Tom Cruise has always been monstrously private...so why should hiding his baby this time be any different? It shouldn't be.

So whats the deal? Has he always been a loon and his previous genius PR people have hidden it? Maybe his sister botched it? Maybe his previous PR people spent the past couple of years showin' 'em whose boss? An obvious thing to say in this forum, but great movie script idea....

Thing is, noone knows what his gig is? The media just has way too much power with respect to public perception...

For YOU it doesn't make a difference (and personally I agree with you, Callaghan), but I think Isaac is talking about the general public, and I think the majority do not seperate the man from the work.

Jeez, John...

I hope you understand I'm not trying to be an ass, but that sounded sarcastic to me. I hated every single movie you described, and Tom's minor acting is a big reason in all of them.

I stand corrected. I liked Mission Impossible. And I didn't see the 3, although I know it was a hit and produced by him - so maybe he's not so crazy afterall...

I liked him in The color of Money, Risky Business, and maybe the one where he's a JAG Lawyer... (forgot the name...) Yes, I, too, prefer the old cruise, when he was young, played young hotshot characters (and even so, he already was a bit crazy! Lol!) and didn't look lie a psycho.

Now I'm sure a lot of people still like him, he is a giant as far as superstars go, and surely have his charisma. Also, for a big studio, he was worth gold, so if somebody broke the deal with him, because he was acting weird... Well, that has to be incredibly weird!

I think people can believe in whatever they want, even scientology. I heard there was a Jedi church somewhere in the UK, so scientology doesn't sound so bad... But the sad truth is that for me, his acting doesn't cut it anymore.

Really, if you ask me, Tom Cruise is a lowsy actor. Bad, not average.

My .02
