HVX200 & Heathrow Airport....

I'm sure that many of you will be aware that there has been a major security upgrade at UK airports. I'm due to fly to India (Delhi) next week and was wondering if anybody can acually confirm that they've been able to take an HVX as hand luggage?
Cheers

Have the same question for
Amsterdam > Schiphol
and Chicago USA
Do they accept a 1510 or/and 1600 Pelican?

I read somewhere that they had to check their camera bag and carry on the HVX by itself.
If I find where I read that I'll post the link.

Although far from perfect it would be preferabled to either having the choice of in the hold or leave it in the box provided =8O

If you could find the link I'd appreciate it.

I think your best bet to be sure is to call the airline you're flying and talk to them directly.

I've sort of done that in similar circumstances and found what the person on the phone says and what the checkin people say is usually different. A "Well the customer service people assured me I could take it as hand baggage" get a <FX:Shrug> "In the hold/ leave it behind or don't fly.... choice is yours buddy" :(

I was very lucky, flying through London from London on July 18 before it all began. Even then, BA was very strict on hand-baggage and the only way I got the HVX plus a separate carry on with laptop on board was the fact that I was flying business class. Bottom line here is that it all depends upon the ticket counter agent and then upon the gate agent. Personally, I would now only travel with a camera in a Pelican or similar case in the event it needed to be checked. Heard a horror story locally about AA and two betacams taken from someone on a regional jet. She watched as local baggage handlers put them gently in the nose of the plane and watched in Knoxville, TN as the handlers deliberately threw each bag from plane to baggage cart. One camera was totally destroyed and one suffered a broken lens. Final word-- if I were going somewhere to shoot and had the luxury of bidget and availability, I would rent a camera at destination.

I just dislike checking this type of valuable equipment.

I recently read that the airlines lose bodies/caskets all the time.

Now how do you do that?

If you called your airline, and got green light, do like Ned said, bring it in a pelicase (1510) for the case that you cant take it hand luggage, and if that works, take A LOT of time for check in, i nearly lost my flight last time (before london-events), cause they checked HVX and laptop very well with a special tnt machine...so good luck for the flight to india!

I flown with my HVX in a lowelpro backback instead of my storm case.. which pretty much is only used when I have to ship the camera or when it's going inside a grip truck.
I love the backpack as it also holds my laptop.. and I can easily carry it through the airport, check it in without much trouble... and then walk around with a bag that doesn't SCREAM expensive camera inside.. kind of like a pelican case does. The only aweful experience was when the X-ray chick took out the HVX.. vary hastilly and kind of threw it down on the metal rolling conveyer belt... Luckily I put my hand down to cushion the blow... She looked at me and I say, honey that's an expensive camera and I'd appreciate some more care in handling it.. Man, I get protective of the phat baby cam... Needless to say though, once it came out the other side, it had fallen over on the side and that sucked...

So, no matter what, there will be some handling and the x-ray people took about 5 minutes to clear the P2store. That almost made me miss the flight...

So, in that... I love the backpack for the HVX... Small, easy to carry.. and fits in the overhead or under the seat on a plane.

I use to 1510 for our flights and managed to fit everything in there, rails, M2, all that crap. THey make you empty it to go through the security checkpoint, but 1510 is verfied flyable

The 1510 definitely conforms to carry-on standards. Problem at British airports now is that they are restricting carry-ons to briefcase size items. I suppose that the 1510 could withstand checked luggage, but the risks are far greater in checking bags. I'm also wondering whether anyone has actually seen the Thermodyne case that Panny is branding. That should be excellent protection for shipping.

I actually flew on a US domestic flight (United) the same day all the troubles occurred at Heathrow. I had an HVX200 in my small carry on suitcase wrapped in a bunch of bubble wrap. Security did not seem to question it, but this may have been because everyone was focused on finding liquids in passenger bags that day. I am sure things are quite different in the UK however, especially on trans atlantic flights.

I tried flying an internal flight Bristol to edinburgh Friday last week and under NO cicumstances was I allowed to take the camcorder on board as hand luggage. You WILL have to check it into the hold.

Thankfully I've got the 1650 Pelicase so the Baggage Handlers can't really throw the case around as (A) its very big and (B) it's very heavy.

Good Luck

Rich

Regional Jets have very small compartments for your carry on items.
If luggage goes downstairs, it is most preferable that you have your
valuable commodity in a very secure container with the word
"FRAGILE" clearly visible to a handler. Otherwise ...

It's nice to believe that, but... you must remember that the handlers move things all year long.

You try throwing a bulky 34Kg Pelicase around. It's 1kg under the max weight allowed for baggage handlers to lift. Touch wood, I haven't had any problems with my checked gear to date.
