Red Network in Australia

Definitely, that was the idea behind making a thread here for Aussies to post in and say g'day to each other. I have no equipment yet (well, I don't count my little Canon MV920 palmcorder!). Red One will be my first owned camera!! Why not start with the best? :)

I plan on getting a zoom lens to go with it, along with tripod, storage drive, RedCage and matte box/follow focus kit. Rest like lighting etc will be hired on a requirements basis. Might get some form of track dolly though as they are always useful no matter what the production. My company will be geared to cinema narratives as opposed to ENG, docos etc, since I plan to shoot my first feature with Red and hopefully go on from there.

Hehe... sadly north Queensland has a great big reef parked offshore that prevents large waves, but the Gold Coast might turn it on for you depending on the weather.

Like your spoof idea :) Only problem is, what would you film the spoof on if Red was in shot?!

Gold Coast waves (Burleigh, etc.) get pretty crowded. I spent some time previously hanging out and surfing at Noosa. Awesome place for a Mal (longboard to Yanks), long point break, etc. Good place to get out on the head and use the 300mm on RED in morning light...

To do the spoof we'll simply need a big old full-sized camera of some kind for someone to pull out from behind their back, then someone else pulls out the RED one. Without another RED we can't shoot it with a RED, but maybe we can at least shoot it in DVCProHD or HDV (ouch!).

Flights from St. Louis to L.A. or the Bay Area are real cheap! I know you'd like to escape there for a few days in January or February. I'm located on the beautiful Central Coast, half way between L.A. and the Bay Area (3 hours either direction). Donatello is going to drive down from the Bay Area sometime around then to check out my camera. Fly in to the Bay Area, hook up with him, and come on down to the Central Coast. Tons of shooting subjects & locations here (wine country, beaches, mountains, festivals, etc.). Jarred is only 3 hours south of me, and he is getting his camera around the same time as me. Maybe we can get Jarred and Evin to come on up and have a 2-camera RED shootfest! I have good connections for all the hotels here, so I could probably arrange a killer deal for lodging...

Come on over!

i dont even own a film camera!!! (other than my beloved canon g3 for street pictures) that helped me define my genre.

after reading up on the aspects of what makes a good (film) picture (dynamic reange, dof, 24p etc..) since i feel the quality works with inspiration, it put me off from buying anything and rather focus on the script/idea etc hoping technology will someday catch up by the time i was ready. (please excuse me divergence from the topic and bad grammar)

but if that does not work out. loaning out sounds like something i would want to do. even 2k a day ok!

so you guys are considering loaning out your red to anyone who puts down aprox 3, 4 or 5K a day AU?
is the owner generaly considered to be included with a deal like that? (since i would be very afraid of lending it out to someone with sticky hands if you get my drift)

thanks me too melbourne

Well I haven't figured out a scheme yet MrSleep, but I would hope to hire it out for the low end of your figures or even less. Depends on demand I guess, as with any pricing scheme. If no one hires it at rate A, drop the rate. If everyone wants it at rate A such that you have a backlog, increase the rate. Simple economics. Also it would depend on extras with it, such as lenses, tripod, accessories, storage etc.

As for hiring with operator, not sure on that yet, although probably initially this would be the case since it is new technology and there are no real established workflows for it yet on set. I also imagine those who are ready to hire out such a camera probably won't be completely new to filmmaking, regarding your "sticky hands" scenario. On all the films I've worked on I've never seen anyone be any less than super careful with the gear. Maybe I'm lucky. Besides which, DPs are (quite rightly) extremely precious about who gets to hold the camera, change lenses etc. Finally, that's what insurance (and hire contracts) are for. You hire it and break it - you pay for it!!

My plans are similar to Paul's. I hope to recoup a fair chunk of expense through rentals (both with and without me as an operator). The market is small in South Australia, but demand is here, if priced right. In the last week I have met with two budding filmmakers, discussed cinematography and both times been asked how to get shallow DOF!

I feel there is a lack of quality, affordable hd equipment available here (just a lot of sony z1s, last time I checked). I want to shoot my next short film on a Red and, well, someone's gotta bring one here! I do have concerns related to sticky finger rentals, and equipment damage, but that's what insurance is for.

Same here.
I'll be looking for rental opportunities to recoup my investment.

I'll most likely try and package my RED with me. But certainly will just rent RED to those DOPs and producers I have some connection with. (no sticky hands - and I'll carry wipes on set)

Melb RED for you here Mr. Sleep!

I got my titanium R today!

By the way, if anyone knows anything about the number of Red reservations in South Australia please let me know!
